I was born somewhat poor too, but if I managed to differentiate the usages of different grammatical functions then other poor people people should too. It is almost like language inefficiency is worn like a badge of honour. No, we shouldn't aspire to talk like Jordan, we should indeed aspire to talk like Steven Fry etc. People who use language in creative and beautiful ways. They don't try to sodomise the language, only other people.
Why are you of the assumption that the people who find your pseudo intellectual rantings entirely irrelevant must also speak with poor grammar?

Again, it's all down to whether or not you put much stock in text book Grammar.

I'd wager that Haye, putting his energy into athleticism and sporting pursuits has probably garnered greater success and notability than you have with your pursuit of a language.

    Just a hunch.

I love the way the English speak their language, it must be a source of amusement across the pond, to hear how some of us 'mericans butcher it.

As for me, I believe I do a better job than most Americans of "articulating", and/or making myself understood, but let's just say I didn't pay close enough attention in English/Grammar classes when I was growing up. Plus, i've spent most of my adult life in the Southern U.S., primarily in Texas and the 'hick' lingo the locals use use tends to rub off on you.
Anyway, i'm fixin' to put my shotgun in mah pickup, get some mutha fukin' beer, and see if I can find some road kill for lunch.

P.S. Hang in there miles, educate us illiterates.

Far too crass for Miles, he's an educated fool (with grammar on his mind, got my dictionary in my hand and a monocle on my eye)

    Indeed, fuck off AdamGB.

Are we really in a contest to see who has really achieved more? How about comparing me with you then as you seem to want a contest. If that is the case then I think I am the hands down winner. I am controlling the language skills of thousands of people directly. I earn my living by it and am going to spend my holiday researching a paper for publication. I am quite comfortable with my credentials and what I know is appropriate in language use. You probably sell KFC and use forms like "shook". Haye is likely richer, but hey, if you can earn millions by fleecing people with a Harrison fight, then you have to do it right?

You seem to be a lowly educated pleb with a bee in his bonnet over the fact that I will speak my mind over the basic fact that "He's shook" is poor language usage. If we were to all subvert language usage, then we would have a very degraded society, but as things stand it is only ever subverted by those that don't know how to speak or young people who think it is cool to try and subvert it. It is typically the work of lowly educated, working people from more deprived neighbourhoods. If they want to do so then fine, but you show me a BBC news article or journalist ever using this kind of language and I would be quite astonished. It isn't acceptable discourse, it's just passable in the discourse of those that really don't know any better. If you want to do well at school, then you cut that nonsense out. That's a fact.

Anyway, last post in this thread, you silly child.

Is it just me or does Miles seem a little shook?

I read this reply this morning whilst waiting for a client (no I don't work in KFC, despite your presumption . I have to say that trying to get in to a pissing contest with somebody 10 years your junior strikes me as pretty desperate btw) and whilst I knew fine well that you'd end up responding to whatever I said (despite declaring that this was your last post), I wasn't expecting you to undermine your own words quite as much as you have.

3-4 posts later it seems that you are indeed shook.

Aside from your presumptuous attempt at demeaning my imagined job (fabricated insults lost all credence with me long before I left school, though I suppose technically you haven't... so it's forgivable ) you're merely repeating yourself/furthering your tangent.

(...and yes, you probably do have a greater level of higher education than myself. I would hope that being somebody who is supposedly a scholar of the English Language, that you would be able to differentiate between intelligence and the acquired knowledge of a particular subject. )

The fact remains that being pedantic over David Haye's use of grammar is completely irrelevant.

I have to say that I think there is a lot of truth in what Stephen Fry was saying, in a job interview you dress yourself up and you dress your language up - to do otherwise gives a perceived lack of caring:

Given that David Haye was having a verbal face off with a man that he is about to fight... I think that his use of language was in fact highly appropriate given the context. Why dress his words up for Wlad? Why show Wlad that he cares enough or respects him enough to do so?

You could have quite easily admitted that your pedantry over the finer points of Haye's grammar was entirely irrelevant and saved face. Unfortunately you're too pig headed to do so... so instead you've floundered on and dug your hole deeper and deeper.

Are you honestly comparing the language usage of an international journalist informing the public to that of a heavy weight boxer facing off with an opponent. Can you not see the difference in context?
