You called me a cunt three times so fuck you once again. I only ever get nasty in response to someone dishing the insults first.
It is about respect for rules and form. If we woz all tawking lik dis, den we'd ave a bladdy hawd time commoonicatin. I'm a lecturer myself, so have a deep respect for language and expect others to do so too. There are differences between spoken and written English, but there is a big difference between someone who is well spoken and someone who hasn't even mastered basic grammatical functions appropriately. I simply pointed this out. Haye stumbles around quite a lot, but of course he is a bit richer than me, so I should let it pass.
Wealth is totally besides the point and using uneducated lyricists to further your claim is silly. Instead you should be saying that this kind of language would never pass in the media or in a self respecting classroom. Haye couldn't find the correct words, why are you people so defensive about this? Standards are falling if you excuse these kinds of things. Would you seriously not correct one of your students if they made repeated language mistakes and didn't even realise they were doing it?
All I have done is point out something from a video that has been posted. Language is the first thing I ever think about whenever I hear anybody speak. Such anger and defensiveness, what are you people so wounded by? You started dishing the insults and act like a wounded tiger when I strike back. Tut tut.
And this is really my last post in this thread because I have made my points and yet for some daft reason, a few of you (clearly Haye fans) keep calling me back in. The argument has nowhere else to go and I am content to leave it at that. But no doubt Adam GB will be harping on about silver spoons and showjumping and you will be calling me a cunt again. Well, that's for you two to decide.
After reading through this thread I had to find this Samuel L. Jackson clip from Pulp Fiction. A great one.
OK you cunt, run from a discussion like the cowardly cunt you are. The problem I have is with you expecting everyone else to conform to your expectations. It's a fact that popular culture and region has a large impact upon our language. Some people say nowt and Mardy does this make them lesser people? who are you Mr English Lecturer to pass judgement? Is Haye in a classroom? Cunt?
It isn't really much of a discussion though, is it? You called me a cunt three more times too. You should really be banned for polluting the board in this way. You clearly have anger issues.
Having lived in two very different regions of the UK I have seen and experienced differences in lanaguage and accent, but rarely have I seen rules of grammar be seriously inverted. 'Nowt' is simply a variation of nothing. "I didn't do nothing" is another one that is quite common. Or maybe we could say "I didn't do nowt". Ultimately though it is mediocre and usually spoken by people who really don't know any better. My friends in my hometown would make such utterances and they are still there and probably still saying the same things. I certainly do not teach such localised types of language as I think they are useless and interests are better served by using universal and more commonly accepted language forms. "I didn't do anything" is a far more acceptable utterance. Not only is it correct, but you are less liable to be misunderstood by anyone the world over. It is English spoken properly. Haye isn't in a classroom, but what he said struck me as extremely unorthodox and that is because it is. Sure, he can get away with saying it, but it has a serious touch of the "I didn't do nowt" about it. It isn't a universally accepted usage of that grammatical area. I earn my bread and butter from language and I love language, but poor language use does offend me. I can't make any bones about that.
Your post reeks of utter hostility and malice. I think you should have a cup of tea and put on a happy face for your students. I don't bear you any ill will nor Haye either for that matter. However, for some reason being annoyed with a language form has made people seriously angry. You guys are worse than Haye refusing to shake the magic hand and then getting a hard on. Just chill the fuck out!![]()
Jesus Christ, calm down. So he criticizes Haye for his usage of the English language. Guess what Wlad, Manny Pac also got criticized for the same shit. Not in this thread but people that made them butts of jokes from Wlad's Borat eastern european voice to Manny sounding like an illiterate sounding street kid. But you know what? Their fans didn't go all crazy and ass hurt. And I always thought it was funny that Brits expect guys that don't speak English as their 1st language to have no accent and no trouble speaking the English language.
I didn't even want to get into a middle of this argument. But you did came out and insult people first. Haye fans can sure give it, but can't take it.
Damn, drawing me in by calling me a cunt. It has become standard practice now. But no more, I tell you. This is my third and final attempt to leave this thread and I shall.
Is it just me or does Miles seem a little shook?
I read this reply this morning whilst waiting for a client (no I don't work in KFC, despite your presumption. I have to say that trying to get in to a pissing contest with somebody 10 years your junior strikes me as pretty desperate btw) and whilst I knew fine well that you'd end up responding to whatever I said (despite declaring that this was your last post), I wasn't expecting you to undermine your own words quite as much as you have.
3-4 posts later it seems that you are indeed shook.
Aside from your presumptuous attempt at demeaning my imagined job (fabricated insults lost all credence with me long before I left school, though I suppose technically you haven't... so it's forgivable) you're merely repeating yourself/furthering your tangent.
(...and yes, you probably do have a greater level of higher education than myself. I would hope that being somebody who is supposedly a scholar of the English Language, that you would be able to differentiate between intelligence and the acquired knowledge of a particular subject.)
The fact remains that being pedantic over David Haye's use of grammar is completely irrelevant.
I have to say that I think there is a lot of truth in what Stephen Fry was saying, in a job interview you dress yourself up and you dress your language up - to do otherwise gives a perceived lack of caring:
Given that David Haye was having a verbal face off with a man that he is about to fight... I think that his use of language was in fact highly appropriate given the context. Why dress his words up for Wlad? Why show Wlad that he cares enough or respects him enough to do so?
You could have quite easily admitted that your pedantry over the finer points of Haye's grammar was entirely irrelevant and saved face. Unfortunately you're too pig headed to do so... so instead you've floundered on and dug your hole deeper and deeper.
Are you honestly comparing the language usage of an international journalist informing the public to that of a heavy weight boxer facing off with an opponent. Can you not see the difference in context?

I chalk it all up to Elvis. Remember that little ditty "All Shook Up"? He should have sung it "All Shaken Up". What was wrong with him? It probably never would have cracked the top 40, but at least it wouldn't have started the downhill slide toward grammatical hell we are still experiencing. Look how it has practically destroyed subsequent generations' ability to communicate. Before Elvis, it was only blacks who sang that kind of music and talked that way. Now the whole bloody world is doing it.
My Dad was a smart guy. He advocated jailing and castrating Elvis and obviously if the world had followed his advice we would be much better off.

What is the complaint about complaining about someone's gutter-rat English? Why is Miles getting so over-the-top lambasted?
