Basically,
A Tablette is kind of like a computer except it is not as powerful (at least, for the moment) and use a tactical screen instead of a keyboard, which works well but not as fast as a keyboard, would you have to work on it.
The good side though is that it is extremely pleasant to use with tactical screen, thin and somehow, very friendly user (for the Android and Ipad I could touch) and the autonomy of the battery is much better than a lap top in general (ipad battery life = more or less 10 hours where a lap top is more 3 to 5). Tablets tend to be a tad more expensive now than a netbook by around 200 bucks (guess it,s more or less the same in the UK.)
If you just want to read newspaper, answer casually emails and browse internet, a tablet can be interesting for you for the weight, easiness to carry and the life battery (which I believe is what you're looking for) but if you intend to either work on it or do more complex things, a good little netbook might be better.
The very best actually would be that you find somebody with a tablet/ipad and give it a try to see if you like how it works, from there you might have a very important imput concerning your next investment.
