How can people call themselves boxing fans...but say that his style is boring? You must be that "fans" who only enjoy "brawlers".

No, its not that. Winky's style is less exciting than a lot of great defensive fighters, say Pernell Whitaker, Willie Pep, and even Bernard Hopkins is pretty defensive. Im a fan of those guys and love watchin em fight, and they are not brawlers. Winky's style for the most part does make for boring fights. Watch on Delahoya/Mayweather 24-7 Episode 2 when Sugar Shane Mosley is imitating the styles of himself, Trinidad, Floyd and Winky and tell me which style looks more exciting and which looks more low risk and ultra-defensive. He practically turtle-shells the whole fight and throws mainly counter punches. Sure it works for him and he has accomplished some great things in the sport so im not trying to take away from the guy. But if you ask me his style is not that exciting and for the most part his fights (except for the Taylor match which I liked because I thought he actually showed some aggression) are pretty boring to watch. It's because he is so focused on keeping his hands and arms covering himself up that he never throws any big punches or looks to finish his opponents or even hurt them. Jim Lampley, Harold Lederman and Larry Merchant all called his style "low risk" and ultra defensive before I ever did. And it's their job to watch and analyze boxing matches. Winky Wright is a cool guy. He's a champion. But who would you rather watch fight, a fight with him or say, Manny Pacquiao? Or Roy Jones? Or Joe Calzaghe? Or Marco Antonio Barrera? Or Marquez? Or Klitschko (who is pretty defensive and technical too, but is more exciting to watch than Wright IMO)? And Im not hating I just call em like i see em...his style works well for him but it aint the most entertaining to watch.

Winky Wright is probably my favortie fighter, I never find him boring to watch but I'm biased. He has been more offensively minded in his last few fights against Taylor and Quartey, however I don't think he'll fight very offensively against Hopkins, who's the biggest fighter he's fought.

Winky has mastered that peek a boo style to perfection . Sometimes it may not be great to watch but he is so good at shuttig fighters down with that defensive poise. Anyone who wants to learn how to box just study Winky Wright and you cant go wrong . The guy is pure class .

it is impressive. I do not like it alot since it can win for awhile. but a guy like Floyd would beat him everytime. Speed beats that style of Winky's fighting.

i respect winky alot he deserves mad respect/love for all his accomplishments.

his style is very defense oriented and extremely effective in that manner.

personally i can see how it can be rather boring but its by far consistent and has alot of grace and finesse to it tho!

CC#108.....Perfect way to describe Wright and his style.....Winky has a style that true fans of the Game ( NO PUN INTENDED) appreciate...We all love fast paced exciting action of course but true lovers of the sport appreciate both master offense and defense.....

Winky is the Best defensive fighter in the sport over the last 20 years easy....

He will also retire with a load of money and a solid legacy....PLUS!!!!!!

Wright will have all his wit's about him due to the fact he takes little punishment.....

The guy is a class act,,,never disrespectful,,never does anything to tarnish the sports image,,,,,

To bad we didn't have more guys like him

Honestly...it kills me that people think Winky's boring.

I've never understood it. I wonder what fights people gravitate towards when they make that decision.

Saying that Winky is a low risk fighter? That one's for me to grasp too.

Wright went toe to toe with Vargas, Shane, Taylor, Simon, & basically everyone else that he has fought. The only persons that Wright used a full on peek a boo for the duration was against Trinidad & Soliman. As amazing as I thought that show was...he caught the most flack for those two match ups.

Tactically, Wright is legitamately the best in his weight class...I still say that Wright's weight class is 154.

This hop up against Hopkins...I got a feeling he just shot himself in the foot...but I plan on being ringside to see it...win, lose, or draw.

Hey Wacko , what do you make of this ?

Bernard Hopkins has nearly reached a deal to train under Freddie Roach
for his upcoming fight against Winky Wright, the longtime middleweight boxing champion said Saturday.

Hopkins, who's coming out of a brief retirement at 42,
hopes to work with Roach in Los Angeles during the next 11 weeks in preparation
for his 77-kilo (170-pound) bout against Wright on July 21 in Las Vegas.

Roach trained Oscar De La Hoya, Hopkins' business partner in Golden Boy Promotions,
for his megafight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"We don't have a deal yet, but I'm 99 percent sure we'll have a deal." Hopkins said.

Nazim Richardson, Hopkins' trainer for the last 18 months after his acrimonious split
rom longtime trainer Bouie Fisher, recently had a stroke that left him unable to work full-time with Hopkins.

Roach also has trained Manny Pacquiao
and Mike Tyson, but he rarely devotes himself full time to one fighter,
preferring to work daily with several boxers at his Hollywood gym.
Roach missed Pacquiao's last title defense against Jorge Solis last month
while working exclusively with De La Hoya.

If negotiations with Roach fall through,
Hopkins plans to go with Pat Burns, the former trainer of Jermain Taylor.

Hopkins briefly retired after his upset victory over light heavyweight Antonio Tarver in June,
but couldn't pass up a fight against Wright, who hasn't lost since 1999.
Hopkins went 12 years between defeats before Taylor won a split decision in July 2005

I Love it. I'm a huge fan of guys with a great jab, and who can defend themselves effectively. Obviously Winky fits into two of those catagories. I like the knockout as much as any other boxing fan, but I get an equal satisfaction watching Winky just humiliate guys with his style.
