Pretty clear now that the warrior who once went to war with Shane Mosley, Zab Judah, Ricardo Torres and others no longer exists. There is no warrior left in him. Warrior Cotto is now Track Meet Cotto. That performance was extremely disappointing. Yes he got the win. But anybody that thinks he showed heart is a fucking dumb ass. Margarito was coming off a brutal loss and an injury. Lot of rumors that he might be shot. The chance to massacre him is there on a silver platter. What Cotto do? He runs the whole fight. He spend all this time accusing Margarito. Saying he did this. He did that. You would think he would of gone out there looking to destroy the man who supposedly put his life in danger. But no. He instead shows up in the ring wearing his new pair of Usain Bolt's and proceeds to go out and fight like him. And to make it worse he cries like a bitch afterwards. Are you fucking kidding me? There's no crying in baseball. What the fuck makes fools think there's crying in boxing? Sad day in boxing indeed

But bottom line is there was going to be no sweeter revenge for Cotto THAN a victory, and clearly he wasn't going to beat Margarito going to war no matter how shot he may have been. If a guy is fighting off the backfoot but still landing good shots and winning rounds then the onus is on his opponent to make a fight of it, Margo wasn't able to do that for the vast majority of the fight and Cotto should take a lot of pride in that.

I agree that Cotto didn't show heart in the fight, and Margarito did. The reason for that is, Margarito was nowhere near good enough to challenge Cotto to the point where Cotto's heart was an issue. What Cotto showed were brains and skills. He'll have to face a stiffer challenge than Margarito to prove his heart. As for Margarito, he clearly wanted to continue, and would have continued, showing his heart. Props to him, but that's about all he showed. He knew exactly what Cotto was going to do - stick & move, and target the eye. And he either wasn't smart enough, or wasn't good enough, to stop him. Couldn't get him early, before the eye became a factor, couldn't change angles and protect the eye, couldn't avoid the pinpoint punches. In short, he had absolutely no answer for the ideal fight plan that Cotto executed to a T.

I have my suspicions, but I don't know whether or not the 2008 Margarito did/could have beaten Cotto cleanly. I do know that the 2011 Margarito sure can't. Regardless of what he did or didn't do in 2008, what Margarito is doing nowadays is fighting clean. And whether it's a coincidence or not, he's no longer among the elite (nor will he be again), and Cotto is. And he doesn't even have his reputation intact, which is either his fault or Capetillo's. But he does have a devoted cadre of (largely nationalistic) fans. When he's a bitter old man in the old folks home, they can slap him on the back and tell him how great he used to be. They may as well start now; his glory days are in the rear view mirror, and they're not getting any closer.

That's fair. I think a lot of my initial disappointment in the way Cotto was fighting was that I thought it was going to lead to him getting stopped again. Obviously that didn't happen.

I do think that he looked intimidated and wary of Margarito's power, especially at first, but he comprehensively out-boxed Margarito and fucked up that eye in the process. Like Leddermen said, it is possible to win a fight by running.

The bottom line is that Cotto won decisively, albeit in a somewhat (for me at least) disappointing manner. That's much better than him going to war and losing.
