You're right that they have to start with the basics but you should also get them ready for the other moves down the road like you said.

Even your boxing idol had to start where we all do, but when it came to it he was willing to buckle down and learn some new moves for his repetoir. Hopkins could do the shoulder roll himself, and keeping his body in an angle he could keep his right hand out of sight until he saw the moment to go "Surprise." As you probably know, Hopkins spent a great deal of time studying a lot of great fighters of the past. That move that I just mentioned was from Archie Moore, the shoulder roll was used by a lot of fighters back in the day, and today there's only a handful of fighters that can do it properly.

For a good rising cross check out that boxing manual that I posted a while back, it's an awesome move because if it is set up right the opponent won't see it coming.
Like I said, right now Im in the break them down build them back up mode, position of body, maintaining balance, maintaining a base, etc
B-hops shoulder rolls are awsome arent they?
And believe it or not, teaching the cross as the rising cross is a great way for a stubborn student who isnt getting it.
Feur had the hardest time getting that punch until I showed her the Hammer Of Thor
Now she can throw it at will
How does that rising cross of yours work by the way? Do you throw it from an upright position, do you have a low right hand prior to throwing it? I'd like to know a thing or two of what you found if you don't mind me asking.
    Not at all
I usually show it with the full wip/bob that Ingemar used to do,and use the momentum to set up the overhand
Frazier lived on the thing as well
Its not a punch Id use myself(too tall to risk going that low)but if nothing else its a good training tech
Imagine Frazier bobbing in,now think of the force if he circled his punching motion upwards as a cross
Its still driving your hips, but in a different way,if you have long arms like me,its murder on your shoulders though

As a shorty I like the overhand right and I throw when low, often after a body shot.

I do shadow in the mirror everyday Chris. I've almost always been lucky enough to be a member of gyms with big mirrors.

I can see in my mind what Ingemar's cross looks like, it's like how James Toney would roll away from a shot and be set up to throw a hard right cross.

    How's it a "rising" cross?

Your actually starting the punch on your bob,so your down low,but as you rise to an upright position the shot rises with you
The idea is to get under a traditional guard, and get lost track of for a second

Okay, I see how it could work.

Anyways this is how Rocky Marciano did it, it's called the 'Phantom Overhand.'

    Lesson # 11:
    "Rocky Marciano's phantom overhand".

You can effectively throw this phantom overhand move from a distance that is usually unthinkable when throwing a classic overhand.

A confident opponent has dropped his left hand; as he doesn't believe that you could throw any punch with your right hand from that distance (see figure 1).

Figure 1.- Look to your opponents eyes till you start your move.
Now change your sight to the body as you step forward with your front foot bending your knees a lot and dropping your glove in an arch: This preliminary move makes your opponent suspect an attack low or to the body (which causes him to react and open up further falling into the trap of your real intentions. (see figure 2).

Figure 2.- Your glove will follow a path like the one drawn.
Your legs will work like springs. Bend your knees allot, then spring up fast and let your glove continue the line of the arch; (see figures 3, 4, 5).

Figure 3.- Go up violently, fast with your legs.

Figure 4.- At this point you can look at the target, no problem.

Figure 5. - He won't see (in time) the phantom overhand coming.

Notice: The fist is vertical throughout the downwards-circular move with the knee bend but on the upper part of the figure eight the fist twists into horizontal.

This punch can also be thrown from a distance or even a little closer or a little further than what we have just seen. If you are set up at a greater distance or if the opponent shuffles back creating more distance, you can throw it while raising your back foot making it land further forward as sometimes the great Rocky Marciano did.

If you can post some pictures of this move, that'd be awesome. Then if I ever knock someone out with it then I'd give you all the credit.

Well did you get in his face about it?
There's probably not a whole lot you can do but just let him come whenever he feels like it.
