    Default Pains in my shin

Sometimes when i walk quickly, not even uphill or downhill, but just up the road, my shin warms up n it feels like ive got a hot water bottle under my skin or sumfin. Its puts strain on my shin and throbs as if it was a swelling. But could it be a swelling soon as its been occurring for months now?

    Thanks, Dicki

You probably have shin splints, they are growing pains. And they really suck.

What are you're trainers like? They may be OK for a jog but you're doing serious running now, running trainers are a must... our bodies aren't designed to run on tarmac and concrete... if its really bad do you're road work on a feild... hopefully there'll be a hill near you on a feild.

As I understand it shin splints are caused because the Calfs are absorbing to much force every time you step off and its making them tense which is making the connective tissue on the front of you're shins (which binds the muscle to the bones) come under a great amount of strain and tears are forming.

    Keep your legs stretched off!

There are various forms of shin splints, there are some good sites too be found on the web.
There's one form, as adam mentioned, where the tendons and muscles are tight and they effectively 'yank' on the shin bone on every impact while running, which can lead to pain and even stress fractures in extreme cases. The pain you get from this type of shin splints is on the inside leg, on the actual big shin bone.

Another form of shin splints is called compartment syndrome, this is where the muscle along the shin (on the outside of the lower leg) becomes sore, and the pain progressively worse as you carry on.

The cause of both types are the same however, impact. If you're feeling pain, while walking even, there's some damage already, so I'd recomend rest for now. When you get back to running, make sure you have trainers with serious padding on the sole, made for running, or as adam said, run on a field. This will soften the impact.

If you've got pain by just walking, there are shock absorbing soles available which you can slide into any shoe, this can help soften impact also.

It happens a lot with 16 year olds Stretch. Go to the bottom of some stairs toes on edge drop your heels all the way down leave for a minute then slowly raise as high as you can leave for 20 secs then slowly come down. Repeat 3 times, should help
Pain lasts a only a minute, but the memory will last forever....

If they hurt when you walk, don't pick your feet up too high off the ground as you step. (This helped me. )

Yeah i think it will also prevent some cramps from coming to. Just try not to bounce so much when you are running, cause your going for distance, not for height, ya know.

    you just told him... :P

Nigel (ok so thats not your name but it was a long shot )

Scrap's saying its common for 16 year olds to get them... you're not physically matured yet and its an age where you are likely to be able to run hard enough to do that get that injury... on average a 16 year old's body has developed so much and its at this point you're most likely to get them...

Funnily enough I was 16 when I first got shin splints... so there you go :P
    All hail Scrap

shin splints are very serious, i myself have had surgery on both legs down the inner and outer sides of my shins. the cause can be different for each person, shin splints is merely a term used to discribe problems between just under the knee and just above the ankle.

the best thing to do is stop running and seek a doctors advice, it could be that you have slightly flat feet in which case some orhapidic insole can help, or your dorseflex musles need strenghing, you won't know until you get them checked out
