    Mabuza vows to Silence Marquez
    31/07/2006 12:51 - (SA)

Johannesburg - Boxing trainer Nic Durandt says his fighter Silence Mabuza will not make excuses if he loses to Rafael Marquez.

Mabuza and Marquez collide in an eagerly anticipated IBF bantamweight title rematch at MontBleu Resort Casino in Lake Tahoe in Nevada, USA on Saturday night (Sunday morning SA time).

The two fighters clashed in November last year with Mabuza coming short via a fourth round technical knockout defeat.

However, Durandt argued that the outcome should have been a technical draw as Mabuza's cut was caused by an accidental head-butt.

Since that controversial outcome, Mabuza has been chasing for a rematch against the Mexican.

He was forced to first engage in an elimination fight against Ricardo Vargas, which he easily won on points forcing Marquez to grant him the rematch.

Durandt says his charge turned down opportunities to fight for other world titles in order to get his revenge.

"He sacrificed a lot financially in order to fight Marquez," he said.

Indeed Mabuza was paid a meagre purse for the November clash after the rights to stage the fight had gone to purse bids. His elimination fight against Vargas was also won by a meagre purse bid.

"Mabuza was prepared to take the short end of the stick in order to get this fight," Durandt says.

Despite the optimism, Mabuza will enter the ring as an underdog especially as the fight is promoted by Marquez's new proponent Gary Shaw.

Durandt is not concerned about controversial officiating like the first fight.

"If it happens so be it but the world will know who the winner is and that is very important to us

I'm quite nervous about this fight!!! Rafa better be prepared/

I hope Mabuza can win this. He looked really good in the first match despite the knockdown and I think he was starting to figure out Marquez's style. We'll see what happens, hopefully this will be a good fight, but Mabuza needs to keep his right hand up.

No its Showtime. What makes Showtime better then HBO is that they have PPV for those that don't have Showtime, but for those that do they show their special events.

What makes Showtime worse than HBO is that they have way less fights than HBO on a non-PPV basis anyway. Plus Jimmy Lennon Jr.

but when HBO has PPV's like Rahman vs. Maskaev which you pay 50 dollars for and Showtime has Corrales Castillo, who wins?

Just because they have "more" PPV's don't make them "better" ones

you have a great point there.......the first fight would've been a bargain at 50 bucks...

I think you misunderstood. What I said was that HBO has more non-PPVs than Showtime (unless you count all the Shobox fights I guess, but I have trouble watching most of those--ESPN has better fights).

And while I generally would agree with you on HBO making too many fights PPV (Rahman/Maskaev being the most ridiculous one, no doubt--I'm not sure I'd even bother watching that one for free), they've actually been much better this year about showing free fights (Barrera/Juarez, Winky/Taylor, Toney/Rahman, and Hatton/Collazo all come to mind from just the past 3 months or so), whereas Showtime's been not that great with its fights this year (it's a little curious that Corrales/Castillo is your example since all we actually got was Darchinyan vs. someone I've already forgotten--but that's not Showtime's fault). They had the important but lopsided and thus uninteresting Calzaghe/Lacy fight and a couple others I can't think of now--Lyachovich/Brewster was pretty good--but less good ones than HBO.

    Plus seriously, Jimmy Lennon Jr.?

    I can't see Silence winning.

The first fight was entertaining sure, and Mabuza looked to be hotting up, but Marquez was in control, and he looks to be better in almost every department.

It will be entertaining but I can only see another stoppage for Rafael.

Maybe in about 6-8 rounds this time.

    1. The Marquez fights are on the same card--if you're going to list them both, you need to list the Ouma fight that's on the Forest/Quartey undercard for free on HBO.

    2. Those Showtime fights are all free, true, but they are also only coming at a rate of once a month (Corralles/Casamayor isn't until October). HBO will already have shown two free fights before Showtime gets around to doing the same (Toney/Peter in September). Don't let the fact that there are some PPVs thrown in there distract from the fact that HBO has had more non-PPV fights than Showtime this year, and continues to show them with more frequency.

I hope he does win, and he was coming on a bit last time, but Marquez has still got to be the favorite. More solid on his feet, punches are crisper, just look at the left hook off the jab that he dropped Mabuza with in the first round, and he obviously can punch. Mabuza should move and box a bit more, make Marquez come to him, and he is faster than Marquez.
