Because it was 2 unbeaten champs going at. Lacy was being hyped as the divisions very own Tyson and in turn was knocking people out. He destroyed Reid in front of his own fans. Calzaghe just managed to eke out a split decision over Reid. It was the long time champ against the powerful, younger champ who was looking for another crown....

And then the bell rang....and Calzaghe completely shut him out....

It was undoubtably a big fight...Its easy to criticise Lacy with the benefit of hindsight...

For me it was because it would fill the vacant championship @ super-middle. But both guys were undefeated & Lacy was being touted as the next big thing. I feel Lacy brought most of the hype to the fight, although I considered Calzaghe the better fighter!

Lacy is a good fighter can hold his own with everybody and beat most at Supermiddle !!!!

But Joseph is a force of nature Lacy felt the whirlwind that night and found himself following the yellow Brick road back to Florida .

Joe would do that to everybody from Middle to Lightheavy .

Hopkins hasn't the balls to step in with Joe .

I think that's just to say that, while it was a big fight in terms of anticipation, etc., that was mostly due to the lacy hype machine, and, in retrospect, while it might have been a "big" fight, it wasn't an "important" fight in terms of any kind of legacy for calzaghe. lacy was exposed as a very poor technical fighter with no defense and no plan b. but it's not like there are or were a whole lot of other interesting fights at 168--the division is probably second to HW for worst in boxing (really, everything above middle is pretty bad right now).

One biggy i forgot to write about was that it was a unification fight, one that hadn't happened since james toney fought roy jones jr in 1994!

However i still believe if it was anyone less exciting as lacy, it wont be as hyped. The two fighting styles, ppl wanted to see what is going to happen. Plus lacy was known to be the next big thing, and ppl wanted to see if the welshman will buckle under the pressure lacy presents.

lacy beat robin reid and reid had never been stopped in hes career and lacy stopped him and calzaghe struggled to sd against reid lacy was knocking all of hes opponents out he was strong and unbeaten so many thought of him as supermiddleweight mike tyson and on other hand u have calzaghe 40-0 at that time another unbeaten champ with quick flurries so people were expecting it to be very exciting fight because lacy said it himself when u got two guys with that type of styles u know its going be exciting

i have read a few articles where they basically take piss out of the fact lacy was supposed to be a 168 mike tyson. They say even at that weight he isnt as fast as a young or old tyson. They say he has crap technique. One writer went as far as to say that lacy shouldnt be mentioned in the same breath as tyson.

I have watched 21 of Lacy's fights, and he is pretty good. He could fight and box alittle. i liked his short fight with tsypko. it was like a chess match, everytime tsypko made a mistake, he paid heavy!

I think in the calzaghe fight, he looked too stocky i noticed. He didnt seem himself with all the mean look that he usually had! something was wrong. he said there was things happening back stage that usually dont happen.
I think he got crushed by his own pressure. couldnt handle it.

every great champ lost. Louis took quite a beating for a little mistake, dropping the jab, he come back with an almost perfect jab. He should learn and comeback from it and maybe he'll be great one day....God KnowS!

Good topic! For me, it was big because of the stature and reputations of both of the fighters, and especially of the hype that was coming from the American media, which was filtering through here, and many over here were expecting a much harder fight for Calzaghe. With Lacy's reputation as a banger, I was expecting him to catch Calzaghe and put him down at least once with a big punch in the middle rounds, as Calzaghe began showboating, but he didn't come close, and our man ran away with it.

I was delighted to be there, and it was one of the most impressive nights of boxing (on Joe's part, along with Maccarinelli's good fight too), and an impressive night of drinking and celebrating on my part

I think coz Lacy was hyped so much. Lacy to me didnt prove himself, he was just a heavy puncher to me. I picked joe to beat him soundly by UD. But the thing is i dont think we can judge calzaghe so much on this one fight because he only did what he was meant to do and that is outbox a slugger. Its like the old saying goes, boxers always beat sluggers. Not always true but in cases like this it was bound to be true. I thought joe had the speed advantage, he could bang and that lacy was in for a bad night. Keywords to be mentioned with lacy are power, chin and heart but skill IMO doesnt go there. If joe didnt expose lacy i think somebody else would of. Power punchers can only last so long on their power until someone figures them out.

Your overhyping Joe now... He would have alot more trouble with guys like Winky, Taylor, Hopkins, maybe even Jones if he used more footwork like back in the day. Joe is a great fighter, but there are better athletes/boxers out there.

It solidified Calzaghe as a great champ.....
It feels good to be back home.

I gotta say, I definitely agree with those articles. Maybe not with the comparison to the old Tyson, but Lacy has definitely not shown himself to be in remotely the same class as the young Tyson. The young Tyson WAS faster than Lacy (despite outweiging him by 60 pounds), threw much better flurries, was completely viscious to the body, and had MUCH better head movement.

I admit that I've seen far fewer Lacy fights than you have, but he looked very flawed in every fight I saw. Poor defense, very wide shots, and too much following without throwing. He obviously won very convincingly in terms of knocking people out, but he never looked like he totally outclassed them while the fight lasted.

And a young Tyson would never have just stood there getting hit for twelve rounds like Lacy did against Calzaghe. (Though an old Tyson did just that against Lewis.)
