Default Taking Punches: My Sparring Experience

I started boxing In December, so it has almost been a year.

For the first couple months I took the basic boxing classes and never really even hit a single punch mit (just the bag).

Then I started training with the instructor I am with now, I have learned a lot, and actually started sparring with him..... he then accidentally broke my nose (he is 6'2" and 220+ lbs) and had to stop.

The nose healed up and I was able to spar with a couple people that are far far better than me and were more interested in teaching me and improving some of the finer techniques than hurting me. Then my nose got broken again ( I suspect it was because I did let me nose heal enough ). This was because of an ill fated clinch which resulted in an accidental head butt.

The other day I sparred with a guy, he is 190 lbs (18%+ body fat) , I am 154 with 10% body fat. I explained that my nose was still broke and yet I had no interest in getting it broken for the 3rd time. He neglected to listen to me and while he didn’t break my nose, I got popped with a hook to the head (not jaw) that made me see white for a split second.

I was wondering If I get used to this or what? It was really discouraging. I am a far better boxer than him and if I was not hesitate to take a punch to the nose, I would have made him my sparring partner and not vice versa

    please help?

yeah it happens, let me suggest a different head gear, until you nose heals, it has a bar across the front, like a kickers American football helmet, I use this when I spar towards the end of camp keep you from getting cut or brake the nose. its a little annoying to wear, but at least you can stay active while your healing up ! As for the pain, after period of time you will begin to like it !

O yeah move your head away from the punch ! that always helps ! my poor attempt at humor :P

    I perfectly understand you, dylan!
three weeks ago a got a liverpunch and the lights went out for a moment there,
two weeks ago, when i woke up the next morning, i had a shiner
and two days ago i walked into a real nasty left hook with as result a jaw that doesn't perticulary feel nice
All the result of bad luck ehm, bad diving

You really had a stroke of bad luck there dylan. (or you have a really big-not-to-miss nose )

But yeah, you get used to it i guess. When i started sparring, about every hit i got was annoying. Now only the real hard ones shake you up a bit. You learn to take the punches, your body gets used to them. So hang in there, good luck with your nose, oh, and yeah, practice avoiding/diving

Looks like a combination of bad luck and bad defence(or maybe your nose breaks too easilly). You should let it heal 100% and then work on defense. But you should do this with guys of your own weight or ask the big boys not to hit with ful power.

BTW take care of the nose

    This is a difficult one.

The thing is that boxing as a contact sport and people always like to know where they are in any pecking order ...... especially in a gym.

If you really did get belted good and proper, because your defence is not good yet, you may think about whether it's the sport for you as you will definitely continue to get hit.

It may be, though, that the guys are testing you? Just to see how much you will take and how much they can get away with. If this is the case, you definitely need to stand up for yourself in there and make sure you clock them back a good one. That will immediately get you some 'respect' and they will be more cautious with you.

I have sparred with loads of people who land a real bomb and see how you react, - they swear blind it was an 'accident' and check you are Ok and everything......... but they are really trying it on !

As a general rule - if the guy is worse than you, it probably was a genuine accident. If they are better than you .... bollocks, they are doing it on purpose.

Well, I like boxing alot, I enjoy it, even after I go home with a black eye and a headache. I suspect no one likes to get hit, and I was actually really good about weaving avoiding all of his punches , he landed one which is the punch that kind of made me see white for a split second and I still admit taht I need to work on my defense, but I do say taht my head movement is getting better and I am working slipping punches better.

The guy I was sparring with was not testing me, simply because a) he is not smart enough b) he is not a better boxer and the only reason this post is event here is because he is 50 lbs heavier than me

I am going to wait till my nose heals and see if I can pop him with a good shot

Good idea, if he does keep fucking with you, rub your laces in his face straight away as well. You need to react quite quickly so the idiot understands Cause and Effect!
