Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy wasn’t the only boxer at the Wright vs. Quartey press conference, but he surely drew the most attention. The conference was held to promote fellow St. Petersburg boxer, Winky Wright, in his next fight with Ike Quartey, but the talk of the conference was Lacy’s big comeback. Lacy looked ready to get back into the ring. An opponent has yet to be named for the St. Petersburg, Florida warrior, but Lacy feels he’s ready to face any challenge. When the bell rings on December 2nd, 2006, it will have been 9 months since he lost his title to undefeated champion, Joe Calzaghe. Now it appears he is more than eager to prove he is still a champion.
“This is not a comeback,” Antonio Leonard, Lacy’s manager, said. “We’re just back. We’re bringing the pain. We’re going to do everything but kill the guy in front of Jeff.”
Oscar De La Hoya had his fair share of comments about Lacy as well. “As a fighter I know where Jeff Lacy is coming from. We want to take that next step to become a great,” De La Hoya said of Lacy’s trip to England to fight Calzaghe. “We don’t always accomplish our goals, but we learn and keep our heads high. We all can have bad nights. We know the talent [Lacy] has. He says he’s back… He was never gone.”
Even Wright spoke of Lacy, “as a kid he came into the gym looking to knock out everybody. Lacy opened the gate for the Tampa Bay fighters. Having Jeff on the same card as me is a dream of mine.”
The buzz around Lacy further proves the drawing power he possesses. His brawn and strong offensive style has won him fans all over the world. Lacy could again find himself stealing the show as an electrifying undercard. Lacy stated, “I think people are going to be curious to see what I have learned form my last fight, and what I’ll be bringing to my next fight. I felt like I had a burn, a strong desire inside of me before, but now that I’ve lost it doesn’t compare to what I had before! I did a lot of things that I didn’t think would work against me in my last fight. I learned. You live and you learn. I hope Joe Calzaghe will have the heart to give me another shot at the title as I would have done for him. Everyone can have a bad night.”
Lacy will need an explosive win in his December bout in order to convince the boxing community that his loss to Calazaghe was just a bad night. When the former IBF super middleweight champion was asked if he was scared he had lost popularity or if a second loss would put him too far down to be the champion he strives for, he explained, “I don’t think I’m down. I honestly know I just had a bad night. I can still fight! I’m going to pick up right where I left off.”
Fans and critics alike will get their answers on December 2nd, 2006. HBO will air Lacy’s return to the ring along with the main event of the evening – Winky Wright vs. Ike Quartely. For those lucky enough to live in the Tampa Bay area, tickets for the event, to be held in the St. Pete Times Forum, are already on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets. As an added treat, the untelevised portion of the event is being promoted by Tampa’s One Punch Productions – headed by Terry Trekas. Many of the area’s young and talented boxers will be on display for those in attendance.
I like his motivation...& his attitude.
Back before the Calzaghe Lacy fight...some of you will remember that I said that Joe had what it took to give Lacy issues & that everyone was underestimating him...but I also said that Lacy probably had the power to stop Joe & that this was going to be one hell of a fight...
In the end...two things I said came true.
#1: That was one hell of a fight & #2: Joe's movement & speed wreaked havoc on the lack of defense that Lacy had.
Now...here...with this poll...I just voted that I aint got a clue.
I want Lacy to come back...because in the end...the guy brought a lot to the table for the fans & a lot of exposure to the sport...
But I really think that the beating he took was career damaging.
