Default Calzaghe vs Kessler (February 2007)

WE have speculated about if the Calzaghe vs Kessler fight was going to happen, it seems that the fight is closer now.

According to a Danish newspaper. Frank Warren insist that thefight only will happen in UK and the Danish promotor has now accepted. They have an interview with Kesslers danish promotor Mogens Palle who says

"we are trying to makes this fight happen, that is the fight we are most interrested in"

" We are going to make objective and valid calculations and then we hope that Frank Warren has real intentions about making the fight. Maybe he claims we are demanding to much money so he has an excuse for not letting Kessler meet Calzaghe"

"The first WBC challenger Librado Andrade will get paid to wait and have done so before"

    (my own translation )

The Danish promotor fears that Calzaghe will meet a mister nobody since Frank Warren keep talking about Calzaghe have earned a 20. titeldefense in the UK.

The second obstacle is of course if Andrade will accept to wait again.

I really hope this fight is going to happen

Lets be fair there is no chance of a fight with Kessler. To be honest if Calzaghe took on Andrade I would be more than happy.

I fear it will be probably be someone we have never heard of yet again.

Hang on, Calzaghe's never said "i will not fight Kessler" has he? The "I will not fight Kessler" thread could of been interpreted as - "who the fuck is Kessler, I'll fight him if Frank says so but i'd rather fight a top American"

If FW tells him he's fighting Kessler he'll fight Kessler, simple as.

Frank Warren and Calzaghe don't want to fight Kessler instead Calzaghe is going to beat Peter Manfredo Jr. and after that win he is going to meet Jermain Tyler later on. Mandredo Jr was runner up in the TV show the contender hahhahaha

Well they tried getting Manfredo before Calzaghe was injured in July but apparently Manfredo wanted $1.5million, so his stock has only gone up after his last win so i doubt this fight would be able to made, Kessler is the one but we know what Frankys like, id say we will be looking at 1.William Joop or another old Middleweight maybe Howard Eastman??

Yeah...the attitude of Frank Warren since the fight has done nothing but make me fear it will be another bum. My tip would be Omar Sheika, who has recently been spouting off on www.fightnews.com about wanting another big fight, and after whupping him last time, I could see him get another shot at Calzaghe.

Whatever people say about this fight has already been said bfore the Lacy fight, no one gave a sh*t about Kessler before Lacy got shown up now everyone is looking for someone else that may be able to beat Joe but I dont think its gonna be Kessler, he is to slow robotic and basic, he doesnt know how to move out tyhe way of a punch

Actually what I've seen from Kessler I've been impressed. He dominated Mundine in his backyard despite Mundine giving probably his career best performance and he got rid of Beyer in 3 easy rounds. He was impressive over Eric Lucas well.

Thats all the fights oh his I've seen but from those three he looks strong, and an intelligent fighter.

I fear he could be a far bigger handful for Calzaghe than you realise.

I'd also wager that if this fight does happen it will be because Kessler is willing to concede negotiations to Joe.

I can imagine Kessler coming to the UK to get his shot, I can imagine him agreeing to less money than Joe.

Joe, and I love him he's my favourite fighter, is so frustratingly obtuse when it comes to negotiations that he talks himself out of any big name fights.

I get the impression with Kessler that he is more willing to face the best than Joe is.

I really hope that this fight is made, even if it looks unlikely at present. I feel Calzaghe would be cheating his fans if he doesnt take it.

I hate the petty "No, you come to me" attitude that both camps have displayed (especially as Calzaghe increasingly talks of his 'legacy'). It would be a disgrace if location was the only thing which stopped the unification bout. The obvious thing to do would be to pick a neutral venue in that case - Germany, for example, has a healthy boxing fan base.

Lately Joe has been saying that making super-middle weight is draining him and he wants to move up (talk of facing Woods for his light-heavy belt, for example). Well, the bout with Kessler would be the perfect goodbye to the division. If the fight isnt made, then his legacy will be a nagging doubt as to who was really the best at super-middle, and no-one wants that.

I think/hope he should face Kessler then move up - he owes it to the fans as I feel that he has wasted time since the impressive Lacy win. The Bika fight was awful and he didnt look good at all. True, Bika is a rough and awkward customer, but Joe made himself look stupid with all that ridiculous and severly out-of-place showboating imo.

He should unify all four major SMW belts, then go after Woods and his IBF light-heavy belt - thats another match-up the British fans would drool over. He should drop all talk of RJJ, beating him is nothing these days (hell, Id run Roy close lol), and drop all talk of ever facing Taylor/Wright also - they are always going to be below him weight wise at this stage of his career.
