Default Is Ricky Hatton one of the All Time Greats?

Richard "The Hitman" Hatton boasts a record of 41-0 (30KO). With his undefeated record, if he were to retire now would he be considered one of boxing's greats? He has fought recognizable opponents such as a 36 year old Kostya Tszyu but thats about it. He has fought 37 of his 41 fights in and around England against opponents most boxing fans outside of England would even recognize. But, he did deafeat a 36 year old Kostya Tszyu. Does his victory over a diminishing 36 year old Kostya Tszyu make him on of the top fighters today. It has even been said that Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather has been ducking Hatton. What I have to say about that, if that is truly what the public thinks the sport of Boxing is in more trouble than can ever be expected.

Not an A.T.G., hasnt fought good enough opposition to be in the conversation. The fight against Tsyzu doenst change it.

He's the best body puncher of his generation, best ticket seller of his generation and most exciting fighter since Nigel Benn, and beat the greatest 140lber ever (and reigning lb4lb #1 according to many).

And he's still going, he'll get rid of Castillo in impressive fashion in the summer and then beat Mayweather if Mayweather takes the fight.

Phillips, Tszyu, Castillo, Mayweather - that would be more than HOF.

of course he's not an all time great (yet). but i'm guessing from the wording of your post that thats what your trying to say. the way you make tszyu sound like he wouldn't have beaten any other light welter in the world that night and that beating tszyu is the only thing hatton has achieved in his career tells me your not to keen on the hitman.
i think if he achieves what he keeps saying he's goin to achieve (beating the likes of castillo and maybe even mayweather) then he'll definetly be a modern great. but at the moment ricky has got a lot more to do in the game to gain that position.

He doesn't stack up to, Meldrick Taylor, Aaron Pryor, Julio Cesar Chavez, Bruno Arcari, Nicolino Locche.

This same topic came up about PBF recently. Nobody that's boxing today is going to be considered ATG.

The only ones that may be considered close are:

    ODLH
    B-Hop

No, not even close. Only british fans would even mention the word great and Hatton in the same sentence. I also dont beleive he will ever be considered a great fighter with the the current opposition he has to face, not that they're even great themselves.

Ricky Hatton had his opportunity to fight PBF but he wanted to much money 9+ Million when he doesn't generate that kind of money.. He is not a PPV fighter, He fights on regular HBO because he doesn't generate PPV numbers.. Due to the fact the average person doesn't know who he is... He has no fought any big names but for a 36 year old Kostya Tszyu. He should have lost to Luis Collazo but he go lucky but his face told the story after the fight. Now he has left the welterweight division due to the reality check Luis Collazo gave him and went back down to light welter. If he wanted to fight PBF he would have stayed at welter weight and racked up some victories like Judah, Margarito, Baldomir, and on and on. He knows he can compete at the welterweight level now he is go to fight Castillo there were bigger fights out there for him than this one. I not saying this because I am a PBF fan because I will admit that the most dangerous fighter in the welterweight division is Paul Williams nobody wants to deal with him... The point I was trying to make is that Hatton has not fought anyone accept a 36 year old Kostya Tszyu... Floyd has fought Corrales, Chaves, Castillo, Corley, Gatti, Judah, Baldomir, Manfredy, Hernandez and several other fighters with 1-3 losses.... and Hatton has fought a 36 year old Kostya Tszyu

CCa,gree with everything you said, except Castillo beating Hatton. Hatton will win,he's too young, too agressive and it's his weight class. I don't see anyone going toe to toe with the Hitman at 140 and getting the best of it,I just don't especially the way he dismantled Tszyu. I actually think Hatton deserves a lot more credit for that fight,I'm not a big Ricky fan but he was awesome that night and now,EVERYONE that said Tszyu would KO him in 5 etc etc is now saying that KT was old, over the hill etc. He had a long lay off but he was still a HOT favourite.

    Are you being sarcastic?

    - not nearly the best body puncher of his generation. I'm sure I could think of plenty that are better, but at in and around that weight class alone, Cotto is better.

    - best ticket seller of his generation: Oscar de la Hoya. C'mon, mate. Hatton is not even close.

    - nigel benn was not the most exciting fighter when he was around, so i'm not even sure what you mean there. in any case, manny pacquiao, among many, many others, is more exciting than the clinch- and wrestle-fest that is a ricky hatton fight.

    - finally, kostya was NOT ANYONE'S #1 p4p EVER. when ricky beat the old kostya (in a very close and very sloppy fight), B-Hop was the unanimuos consensus #1, followed by #2 Floyd Mayweather and #3 Winky Wright. Pretty much everyone also considered MAB, Pacquiao and EM higher than KT as well.
