    Default Question about Pernell Whitaker

been watching the Oscar Dela Hoya vs. Pernell Fight for the first time on good resolution, and was Pernell at his best? I've seen him have better defense against lesser opponents, but I kept thinking to myself In the middle of the ring against that Oscar Dela Hoya Floyd would never get hit in the middle of ring like Pernell did... Oscar was robotic, and easy to read. I was just wondering if this fight was after Pernell started using cocaine.

    Who knows?
Even if he would say it was before no one really knows but him and if it's one thing I know is don't trust drug addicts...

I believe he had problems with Cocaine before this fight... It would at least have appeared so in recent fights leading up to this.. And in no way was Pernell, at his best against De La Hoya... If anything I think this just showed DLH has trouble with slick boxers.. While Sweet P wasn't at his best therre can be no denying that he fought his ass off and fought well against Oscar, but certainly he had been on the decline for a couple years even.. Before this fight he had eeked out 2 close decisions over Wilfredo Rivera, and lost most rounds being dropped twice early against Disableys Hurtado... In the prefight's Whittaker didn't even sound confident.. I remember reading one interview with him where he almost sounded like he expected DLH to win.. Saying things like he very well may lose the fight, anyone can get caught with a big punch, etc...

Pernell Whitaker won that fight 7-5 rounds IMO.

I remember the first time I saw it I thought oscar won...but then after watching again I saw all those punches I thought were hitting pernell were really missing. It was easy to be confused there because the crowd would react to those combos oscar threw but in reality most didnt connect. There was that 8 punch combo dlh threw towards the end of on of the middles rounds that the crowd went crazy about...and none of them even connected on sweet pea!

Makes you wonder how sweet pea wouldve done against odlh in his prime. But credit to oscar for fighting whitaker in his first fight at 146

Yeah I love both these guys ! tremendous fighters the both of them., Peat was slick.. what I liked about him was his ability to get angles and turn his opponent. he was so smooth. one of my all-time favorites !
