Default Wasn't that long ago that Cotto-Hatton was a hot topic..........

Remember those days? Hatton was fresh off his win against Kostya Tszyu, and Cotto was a rising star at 140, also. But some people were dismissing Cotto by saying that his title was "only" a WBO title, whereas only Hatton (IBF) and Mayweather (WBC) were worthy. Talk of a possible Cotto-Hatton fight filled the forum. Since then........

Hatton tasted the waters at 147 and found them not to his liking. He barely escaped with a controversial victory over Luis Collazo and now is looking for easier game back at 140, where it's safe.

Meanwhile, Cotto made believers out of many people who thought he'd lose power and/or speed at 147. He had been saying all along that 140 was no longer his optimum weight, and now we know he was saying the truth. He took on a previously undefeated, highly regarded, natural welterweight Carlos Quintana (his win over Joel Julio was very impressive), and beat the crap out of him.

My, how the tide has turned.

Might be a hot topic again a couple of years down the line if Hatton goes to welter again but dont see it for some time.

Yeah! The tables have turned but even I a huge Cotto fan wouldn't dismiss Hatton at any weight that guys loves to fight, he move to 147 was a trial and it didn't work quite as well as he would have wanted to...

I say they meet at a catch weight like at 143 1/2 lbs.... Advantage for neither fighter....

    let me correct you

Hatton Cotto was a hot topic when Cotto was a prospect and all his fans where proclaiming him as the second coming of Ali ... but with a few bad showings Cottos amry of fans diminished but now he has and might i say impressivley stepped up in weight it will be hot topic yet again...

but as Cotto hasnt faced Collazo and Hatton hasnt faced Quintana it still means F all till they step in the ring together all that it now makes to me is a very good match up that i for one wouldnt mind seeing

and now Team Hatton are dealing with top Rank who knows what the future holds.

The Cotto Hatton debate fired up in good style as soon as Cotto beat Quintana. General consensus being that Cotto would be to much for Hatton at 147 and the reverse at 140. Did you miss all that then Titofan?

I think the overwhelming majority of members here expected Cotto to be much stronger at welter. His win over Quintano was impressive but we all expected it didnt we?

Why do some people still not understand why Hatton was fighting at 147 in the first place?

When God said to the both of us "Which one of you wants to be Sugar Ray?" I guess I didnt raise my hand fast enough

Boxing is a sport in which opinions are almost always just the flavor of the month. Remember Eddie Murphy RAW? Umfufu saying "What have you done for me lately?" We're all Umfufu's. And it's ridiculous. Hatton had a tough fight. One of the most popular boxing cliches is "styles make matchups." Well...Hatton faced someone who he had a difficult time with stylistically. Does having problems with Collazo automatically tell how Hatton performs against Cotto? Nope. In fact the only thing anyone should take away from that fight in regards to a Cotto fight is how he handled the weight. But he handled it on fairly short notice so I'm not even sure we can take that away from the fight. But that doesn't even matter imo, because I don't think Hatton takes a Cotto fight at 147.

Both Hatton and Cotto are spark plugs. Both two of the more exciting boxers in all of the fight game. What Hatton did to Collazo and what Cotto did to Quintana have little bearing when talking about a potential Cotto - Hatton fight. When Hatton destroys Urango the Hatton fanatics will flare up again and the tide will change again. Just the way it works, doesn't mean to much.

Sorry about the editing, Chief. Hope it came out alright, since I'm not very good at editing.

My point: Cotto was dumped on excessively before, and Hatton walked on water (off one fight, I might add). Now Cotto is getting his just due credit. That's all I'm saying.

Even though we disagreed on this debate the one thing we can agree on is that this topic was still alive and well, as a matter of fact that thread was like 16 pages long last time I checked.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

    Somewhat prematurely

This place was full of Cotto 'fans' pre Bailey; loads of guys with some serious chips on thier shoulders who simply jumped on the HBO bandwagon. Lampley and Merchant were quoted like gospels from the bible...of course, no one ever seemed to appreciate that HBO had serious cash on Miguel and were hoping he'd fill the void left by Trinidad.

Strangely, the less one sided Miguels fights became (and therefore more exciting) the less and less they seemed to visit. They couldn't cope with dealing with the fact Miguel was actaully human after all, not after the kind of things they'd been saying about Miguel being P4P.

I've never been anti Cotto...just anti Cotto fan...and I don't mean genuine fan...I mean these kids that come on stirring it up and you can just tell they've seen about 10 minutes on youtube or sommat
