    Default Legal Question

Now as some of you may already know I had a little website where I sell boxing dvd's

A few weeks ago my paypal account flagged a warning saying that as I had received over £4500 in payments over the lifetime of the account (2 and a half years) that I needed to confirm my identity to comply with anti money laundering regulations.

Now I'm really worried that I'll be under investigation.

Does anyone with any legal savvy know what I should do, whether I should be afraid, or even very afraid or is there nothing to really worry about?

How do they want you to confirm your identity? Is it through the site or was it an email?

Well paypal could turn you in to authorities I suppose. But it is still very different from some authority to contact you. They probably just handle it all internally. I don't know where you are based out of, or anything about internet law. I do know that internet regulations change very frequently.

Hi guys, yes it is a genuine email. I've had 180 days to comply. I needed to follow 4 steps.

    1. Verify credit card by them making a £1 payment and giving them the ref number. Done

    2. Receive an automated phone call from them and email them the number given to me over the phone to prove my address. Done

    3. Upgrade my account to a business account. Done (Now thinking that was a bit foolish)

    4. Link to a bank account and allow them to make £1 deposit and give them the ref number. (Not done this yet)

I did ring paypal and asked if this meant I needed to declare myself to the taxman and the girl on the phone just laughed and said no, it was nothing to worry about.

But to be honest most customer service people know fuck all so I wasn't convinced

Just wandered if anyone else on here has had this happen to them?

sounds like a fishing email from someone trying to hack your account, I would call paypal, and talk with someone about the authenticity of the email.. I got a similar email a few years back from Amazon.com... asking for my credit card info and all, the link they had attached looked legit, only its was a fake site mirroring the exact look of Amazon.com. make a phone call mate !

I had a website selling boxing dvd's, that is probably something to hide I guess?

@Lords Gym, no it definitely is not a fishing email I have been corresponding with paypal about this for a couple weeks.

It's standard policy, looking at the eBay community boards its happening to loads of people I just want to know whether it IR will come after me or not?

just be sure to pay the tax on your sold items, if your listed as a business you need to do that.

You are small potatoes don't worry about it. Verify if the stuff is legit from PayPal and do it. That's not enough scratch to get anything more than a fine of a $100 bucks or so if you did get audited.

It sounds like you are going down the road that leads to you handing over some of your ill gotten gains I'd be tempted to follow their prompts and then clean the account out, you can do that right? Would it be a big deal to use another payment provider?

Who do you get your media from by the way?

Yeah I'm thinking of doing that now. I've got 800 quid in the account and am looking at things to buy to get rid of it.

I think I'll close the website, I really enjoy doing it but if it means me not being able to sleep at night it probably isn't worth it.

Could you not just switch to a different payment setup? Ride that one out until if/when they want you to be a business account holderas well?

Shame to throw away a good money spinner
