Default Cotto-Judah PPV numbers and plan B for Cotto.

Current WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto is slated to face his Top Rank stablemate, WBO welterweight champ Antonio Margarito, who defends his title against unbeaten Paul Williams on July 14.

Should Margarito lose, promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank has several other options in mind. He recently revealed to boxing writer Dan Rafael that if Margarito loses, the two fighters at the top of the list to face Cotto are IBF welterweight champ Kermit Cintron and another Top Rank fighter, slick boxer Joshua Clottey.

Arum revealed that the Cotto vs. Zab Judah pay-per-view, which took place on June 9 in New York's Madison Square Garden, did about 225,000 buys. Top Rank needed about 150,000 to break even.

Williams is also in the mix, depending on his performance if he wins. Arum said Mosley is the one they want the most, although it is obviously the most difficult.

Those are awesome numbers imo, taking into consideration his age. He has a long way to go,as long as he keeps winning,he is going to be a megastar!

CC back brother. Good news indeed. We need megastars like this man,Pacman, guys that are willing to put it all on the line, willing to fight anyone. Cotto ducks no one,a true warrior and hopefully,a superstar is about to be born.

    I wouldn't call 225,000 buys awesome.

Considering the two fighters I would have expected at least double that.

Liddel vs Jackson 2 took over a 1,000,000 buys.

When you consider that this was one of the biggest fights of the year so far as well it's pretty poor imo.

Way off Bilbo. Firstly, the fight to compare to the Lidell fight would be Oscar Floyd, that was it's equivalent.

Secondly,Cotto,at this stage in his career,is doing pretty big numbers. To consider double that is ABSURD,not many fighters do over 400,000 bar Oscar!

Cotto is young, and like I said,as long as he keeps winning, those numbers will grow. I'd like to see a comparison of his numbers at this age with PBF,Mosley and even Oscar, just to see how he compares,CC to anyone that can find them

I'm sure I recall Mosleys fights with Vargas were in the 300k region, and Mosley has been around for a long time. Cotto is on the right track.

putting cotto in with mosley woul;d be a stupid move, and i think putting him in with clottey would be stupid also, if he lost to clottey kit would hurt him bad, barely anyone knows who clottey is outside of boxing fans

also there is no point in him fighting cintron, it would be useless, it would be like a 5 second KTFO for cotto

but 225 isnt that bad considering cotto at this point is probably only known to puerto ricans and boxing fans, and most people who dont know boxing have never even heard of judah

Why woould putting him in with iMosley be a bad move?? I agree with Clottey though,I think we need Margarito to win so at least that would have the Mexi-PR angle. Cintron Cotto unification on PR parade day would be huge! I think 225 is impressive for the reasons you said. Arum is the best promoter for building stars imo.

Oscar Mayweather is the biggest fight, 1,400,000 buys.

Actually the Oscar Mayweather fight was over 2,000,000 buys, 2.15 million to be exact.

A quote from this source http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6441534.html

Boxing, mostly through HBO Sports, averaged around 425,000 buys in 2006. While fighters like former junior lightweight champion Erik Morales, former welterweight champion Shane Mosley and current division champion Miguel Cotto all have strong followings and have performed well on PPV, none of them have the crossover appeal to draw in the causal fans necessary to generate 1 million PPV buys.

    I say again 225,000 ain't a big PPV

Its pay -per -views that are killing the sport. Look at these two fighting tonight, watch the numbers baby. These two warriors should be commended win or lose. You also have to take into consideration the costs of the pay-per-views when countin number of buys.
