Default Noisy neighbors and no hot water

In Korea everybody lives in tall high rise apartment buildings. Unfortunately I do as well.

There are a number of inconviences. In this building once every year they clean and repair the main tank and boiler. In Korea everything seems to be communal and so 1 apartment with no hot water means all 70 or so apartments with no hot water. For some reason they choose to do this in the middle of July. So for one week there is no warm water in the hottest and stickiest time imaginable. I am a man that likes to soak in a warm bath and no hot water means no bath unless.....you turn on all four of the gas burners on the gas range and heat up a lot of water. In the process the temperature goes up to about 40'c. Not pleasant. Im not a fan of Ice Cold showers. No offence intended, Ice Cold.

The other issue I have with apartments are the annoying noisy neighbors. Korea is hot in the summer and so I generally leave the window open when I sleep. These neighbors have always been noisy. They seem to think its fine to shout whilst walking past the front door. Last night, I was having my usual struggle to fall asleep and it must have been about 5am and I hear this banging and loud voices. Yep, the neighbors were doing their inconsiderate nocturnal thing! I emerged from my semi slumber and the noises continued. I was irate and shouted out the window in English which they probably couldnt understand "shut it with that noise!!". And guess what a voice shot back (a voice that knows only a few words of English)? He shouted "fuck you"!!! I got up and put on a shirt and opened my door and simply said "You cunt!!". He didnt reply and closed his door behind him.

Today I knocked on their door 4 times wanting an end to their nonsense. No answer each time. I will get a solution to these horribly inconsiderate noisy people!!!

Ive lived in apartment buildings before but never this level of discomfort. When I walk outside my apartment Im always quiet because I have a concern that I might be annoying someone else. And yet these neighbors do not have this aspect of thought in their heads.

I know what you mean. Im at that stage where a lot of things just play on my nerves.

I believe that people should treat others as they would like to be treated in return. In Korea it seems like its each family for its own at any cost to others. Very selfish.

I too live in an apartment complex, although it's no problem at all to me as I'm the inconsiderate one whose up all night watching films and listening to music.

Nobody has ever complained though so I'm guessing no problem.

As for your problem, just beat them up, they are only Korean men so probably barely 5 ft tall. Just smash their bicycles and break their cameras, they'll quieten down.

In the home im much the same as you. Im always listening to music and have films on at a volume suitable to enjoy. This is in the home and I doubt very much that the neighbors can hear at all though.

To be honest I felt like punching the guy last night. I mean, there he was hauling stuff noisily outside my bedroom in the early hours of morning and speaking loudly. And then when I got irate and simply shouted to shut it up and with him responding in plain english "Fuck you!"....well, that pissed me off. There is a time and a place.

He was being the inconsiderate moron and then me being abused with the "Fuck you!!". Unbelievable.

Tonight after work I will again knock on their door. I will try to be polite and explain that their actions are inconsiderate and for them to actually think about what they are doing. Also I will ask them not to tell me to go and fuck myself in future. No need for that. If they fail to respond as I think they should then maybe I will need to be more forceful.

I have a truce with my neighbor now. He has promised to try and be more considerate to my sleeping habits and I have in turn agreed to not yell at the first sign of noise.

In fact we both found a common gripe in the hot water being off for over a week in the middle of a scorching summer. He has lived in many apartments in Korea and has never been subjected to such a silly yearly policy either.

My big gripe with these apartments is that the communal thing is taken too far. As an example, in the winter we all pay the same heating bills. Because of this the heating is on at set times each day and so even in the middle of the freezing Korean winter I sit around in shorts and t shirts with my balcony windows wide open and with snow blowing left right and centre. Very wasteful and downright annoying. I really resent not having these basic choices such as when and when not to heat my home or use hot water for a week in July. Right, Im through with my venting now!!
