who the fuck is ruiz? Beating the worst heavyweight champ of all time doesnt add any credibility to jones at all. but he should never have gone back down to light heavy afterwards. he should have moved to cruiserweight.

It doesn't matter if Ruiz wasn't that good of Heavyweight it was still amazing feat and it had not been done since early 1900s the question was where he would of been rated had he retired after Ruiz fight.

Roy Jones would have been the greatest ever fighter, as you have said it was an amazing feat to do. As bad as Ruiz is he was still able to beat many fighters and whilst he was not the best heavyweight at the time, Lewis was, it was an incredible accomplishment. He is the best p4p fighter I have ever seen and if he retired after that in my eyes he would have been the greatest ever!

Depends what kind of skills you're talking about...

In terms of athletic skills, Jones was one of the most talented fighters ever.

In terms of actual boxing skills, Jones left a lot to be desired. The list of fighters who had better boxing skills than Jones is a loooooong list. This lack of refined skill is a big reason for his sharp downfall.

I am a massive Jones fan so maybe I am looking through ROY tinted glasses but I disagree with the above comment. I think that Jones' fantastic athletisism allowed him to write a boxing textbook of his own. The reason for his sharp downfall was simply that his body could not handle losing all that weight.
The thing was that when he moved up for the Ruiz fight he put all his weight on in muscle which is ultimately a lot harder type of weight to shift than fat.
To get back to the original question I think that if he had retired after the Ruiz fight he would have been remembered as a certain top 10 p4p of all time fighter (I already think he is).

I use to be one of Roy biggest supporters but he really showed what he was made of the last couple of years now i cant stand him. It is amazing to accomplish what he did in his career up to that point, but now that i am not Jones fan anymore and now i can see clearly his quality of opponents for the most part was terrible. He wasted all that talent for all those years whipping the asses of bums. It hard to place in a spot because he never fought no A-list fighters in their prime. Oh and he sucked as a rapper.

You say he never fought any A-list fighters in their primes. Did you know he fought Toney and B-Hop??
He also Unified the Light heavyweight division so he beat every governing bodies No1 man. What more could he really do? Don't say fight Lennox or anything like that because lets not forget he did start out at light middle and Lennox was a full fledged big heavyweight who was quality.

Actually Jones fought one the best opposition of his generation people are way too hard on Jones opposition.

    Bernard Hopkins
    Virgil Hill
    James Toney
Mike McCallum old but still pretty good

These 4 names are hall of famers and Jones easily beat all 4 and then you have got other quality opposition like.

    Montel Griffin
    Clinton Woods
    Vinny Pazienza
    Merqui Sosa
    Reggie Johnson
    Eric Harding
    John Ruiz
    Julio Cesar Gonzalez

Not a bad list of names if you ask me.
