I tried doing a search for standing 8 count on google, but didn't find a clear answer. I've seen it referred to in descriptions of boxing matches. What's a standing 8 count, and does it happen often?

When someone is knocked down, the referee mus count as high as 8, even when the person gets up. It's a boxing rule.
Also it seems to happen when a fighter is getting absolutely hammered but not knocked down.Originally Posted by DMD
Defferent states, commissions, sanctioning bodies, etc., have different rules. The two previous answers explain it correctly. If there is no standing 8 count and a fighter is getting hammered the ref has the option of stopping the fight. Any time anyone goes down, however, there is a minimum 8 count given before the action resumes. Does this make any sense? If not I apoligize. I don't want to add to the confusion.
I think I see how it is. Whenever you get knocked down, the referee counts to at least 8, even if you're up and ready to go by 3. It gives you a short break from fighting. Right?
What's the 8 count rule in Pennsylvania?
If you get knocked down and get back up before 10, what do you do to show the referee you're ready? Wave your hands? Say something?
