    Default Joint Pain relief......

I started skipping 2 weeks ago and I've been getting Ankle pain resulting to knee pain, like it actually hurts, whenever i jump, skip, or run. I bought top line running shoes, which did help out a bit in reducin the pain, but they still kill whenever I do anything involving pressure on the joints. I spoke to a trainer I know, and he goes just warm your joints up before anything, and ye I do always, but that doesnt do shit either, so I am starting to worry if i have tendinitis or something that can potentially damage my career in boxing, anyways my question is, are there any people who are undergoing the same issues, and how do you treat it. And please dont say 'rest' because i rested for a week and it was useless and didnt help.

I currently have that tendonitis pain in my knee. The best self diagnoses i have is that its "Patellar Tendonitis". With time it goes away but it comes back just as easy, as a dull bruising pain. Currently im doing hindu squats to try and strengthen my knees/legs to hopefully remedy the problem.

The pain started when i didnt stretch one day before training. Big mistake.

I had knee pain for a long time. Sorry to have to tell you this but one week of rest doesn't count as rest with this sort of thing.

Knees seem to take a long time to recover once they've decided they're unhappy and it's often really difficult to diagnose exactly what's wrong.

I spent a lot of money trying to get my knee fixed which didn't reveal much. In the end I think it was a secondary symptom of a back problem I have rather than anything I could treat directly.

The longer you train through the pain the longer you are likely to need to take more time off to get over it too.

My knee is pretty much better now but for about a year I didn't think it would ever be normal again. Rest means reduce impact more than rest I think.

For a few months I did nothing but swim and then when I came back to boxing training I didn't do any skipping or running for a long time.

Gradually I felt could do more, starting with short jogs on soft grass and normal skipping and now I'm not restricted at all - plyometrics being the last thing to find I can do again.

You WILL have to modify your training to reduce the shock to your joints and every time you try to come back to normal training too quickly you WILL feel pain again. It's highly likely that it'll take a long time to work out exactly what went wrong but once you understand it you'll be better off.

I think most people with permanent knee trouble have either had surgery, some sort of destructive sudden injury which resulted in completely snapping the ligament or they just don't take the time they have to to recover fully and pushed it too hard to the point of no return.

Be patient and you'll come good eventually and yes I know it's frustrating!

A few other little pointers just in case what helped me helps you too (no guarantees that it will):

    1) Glucosamine with chrondoitin + MSN - get it, take it!

    2) Get some treatment. If one type of professional doesn't help you try another. For me a physio I saw didn't really help at all.

A chiro did, not just because she helped my back but because she corrected a 'twist' in my knee which I think I get when my back is really bad. I'm prone to it because my knee cap moves easily since the grove it sits in is shallow and the ligaments around it have excessive laxity.

This is not something I found much info on looking on the net but she could show me how much my knee cap could move compared to hers etc and I heard the clunck when she adjusted my knee and she has helped a lot more than anyone else I've seen.

Other problems she wouldn't be able to help me with though so I guess just don't limit yourself to one type of health professional if you're not getting good results within a few months.

    3) OK 2 obvious things but just in case:

What kind of floor are you skipping on? Anything other than sprung floor boards is probably going to do you some type of damage. I know a guy who won a national title - was going really well but then his back was totally screwed up (stress fractures apparently) from skipping on hard surfaces and I haven't heard of him being able to compete at all or do anything for over a year.

Also how do you know your shoes are the right ones for you - did anyone look at what you feet do (rolling in or out) and specifically recommend them to you or is it just that they were pricey?

Great advice Sharla! MSM has also been shown to work as trainer monkey says. Check out the shoulder tendonitis thread.

Btw, im throwing this out there to anyone..

Do flat shoe soles contribute to bad knees also? I was wondering because all the arch in my shoe is gone. I was just wondering if that could be a factor.

A Mr Sholes(sp) will probably help quite a bit, because yes,it does, think about the added pressure, and where its going to sit

Run on grass also man. This is from a fellow bum kneer. When i hit the track, even though i know the sandy/gravel track is a forgiveable enough surface to run on, i still choose to run on the grass. So much easier on the joints, and you get added resistance also. Its a win-win.

I think even with normal carpet on concrete it'd be a bit tough on your body - I know a coach who made skipping boards for use in his gym which had concrete floors. I think from memory they were just like a normal slat floor held just above the level of the rest of the floor with little blocks all nailed together so there was some give in the boards but the whole thing was big and stable enough.

Sorry I can't give detailed instructions. Maybe some of the more practical guys on the forum can help out more on this? ..................................

You cant just jump and go hard at it without warming up.
You really have to warm up all the joints you are about use with fast light work and then loose fast shake outs to loosen them up first.
Then rocking knees backwards and forwrds while holding onto both knees.then revolving your knees both ways slowly then fast as ,Then stand on one leg and revolve your ankles both ways .Play around enjoy yourself; Improve balance by eventually closing your eyes and trying it.
Then light fast very short sprints, running up and into tight turns.
Then most importantly do stretches every way you can stretch ,sitting on floor ,legs out stretched pulling your foot backwards .

Sitting on your feet with them behind you and under your ass etc .

Then do your hard work and then most importantly again ! -warm down slowly after wards with all the above stuff in a fast loose fashion and then light stretch out to fiiniish.

I went right through a lower back, total leg and joint routine for Donny recently in some post ,I forget where it is though..Ill have a look.

    I can explain it.
But I cant understand it for you.
