Default Pacquaio won, but why didn't he do what was working early?

I thought Pacquaio was controlling the fight early... he lost the second, but besides that he had won three of the first four rounds, but then Marquez scored a body shot in the fifth that really halted Pacquaio's momentum, but after that point he didn't ever use his jab to lead into that left hand and it totally puzzles me. Marquez, with his diminshed footspeed, couldn't escape the jab or double jab followed by the cross, but Pacquaio, for some reason, didn't throw that combination or any punches for a long periods of times, and allowed Marquez to pick him apart at times. Only Pacquaio could dominate someone so completely one round only to have them outbox him the next round, I mean in the first round he couldn't land to the head he went to the body, but after awhile he turned into a scared, yet tough, fighter who wasn't willing to throw punches in earnest until the 8th or 9th round, and even in the moments he did throw something, they were usually looping punches that were getting countered. He had Marquez beat, his speed was confusing Marquez, his skill improvements were giving Marquez a hard time, but his lack of sticking to his guns almost cost him a fight he had no right to almost lose... if he had foughten the way he should have, and the way he did in round 3 and 4, Marquez(as good as he is) wouldn't have been able to compete.

I fully agree. he should have done the same strategy in the earlier rounds especially just like in the third. Pacquaio seems to have slowed down.

Slowed down? His footspeed and handspeed were out of this world... he looked so dominant early, but I truly think a body shot really disrupted him, but that usually only lasts a round or two for a guy of that caliber.

Yes, PAcquaio really slowed down. Compare his other fights with this one. He may be fast compared to other boxers but compared to his prior fights before, he's slower.

From what I saw his workrate was the only thing that slowed down, his handspeed was as fast as its been, I don't think any southpaw, except Zab Judah, has ever thrown a left cross faster than he was behind those jabs.

Have you seen all the fights of Pacquaio, Taeth? coz I really detect some slowing down in there. He may still be fast but I still believe he slowed down.

Could his sudden increase in weight affected his speed? Remember from 129 to 147(?)....

great analysis taeth... i think he really got bothered with the body shot. i think he got tired quickly in this fight. by around the fifth round, i was noticing that they were icing his legs already. but i think he did enough to earn the close win. i think the KD made the difference. i dont know why jerry roth scored the fight 115-112 for marquez. it looked like he gave round 3 to marquez too.
