I've heard varying things from varying people. Certain trainers have said it can hurt growth plates and reduce overall height. (this is if you're still growing). but my doctor said it would not. depends who you ask i guess...
It can stunt growth if you go at it too heavy and you are still growing.
I've never heard anyone argue that lifting wouldn't stunt your growth. If you're as tall as you want to be, or you're already into your twenties, it's probably not going to hurt anything. But heavy workouts do stunt your growth if you're still in your growing years.
There's nothing complicated about it... working out tears down muscle tissue. Your muscles recover and rebuild. That recovering and rebuilding uses up the same energy that might otherwise be used for growth spirts. And the added tension and strain on growing or underdeveloped bones and joints can do irreparable damage.
It's the same thinking that makes a Veterinarian tell you not to let large breed dogs get too much exercise when they're still growing.
No. Doing heavy squats stimulates natural growth hormone. If anything you'll grow.Originally Posted by beast

I'm 23 and 6 foot tall, believe it or not I've actually grown taller scince christmas.
my dad was 6ft 5, my mum is 5ft 11.
i started lifting when i was 12, and im 17 now and only 5ft 10/11
could be a coincidence? i think not
depends what you were lifting and how.
my friend chris sitting next to me said "ive never done any lifting in my life, and look how tall i am"
i cant even see chrisses head hes so damn tall
that is all
thats just genetics
I'm from a family of short arses I'm up to 6 foot and have lifted scince I was about 8
That is all.
How old are ya?
If you are in your mid teens, don't worry about it, as a kid you are gonna grow like crazy, and your growth plates are in a premature overtime.
Unless you drop the freak'n barbell on your head the weights aren't gonna make you any shorter, and Squats aren't going to do squat for making you any shorter than what's in your genes. Make sure you get the enough nutrients and minerals and you'll be ok, you'll actually need more calcium than the regular joe because weightlifting has a way of rearranging the calcium deposits in your bones and make'n them denser.
I recommend you keep pumping the iron, and keep it up with the squats and bench. Squats also strengthen your back and a strong back has good posture and stud written all over it. You wanna be a stud dont'cha?

If you hear a voice within you saying that I am not a painter, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.
it could if ur below 16 years of age as you are still gorwing and stuff
There isn't one shred of evidence to prove this. People just want another excuse to not go out and hurt there body the way you have to do it to be the best.
I heard that if your not done growing, that you should do push ups and sit ups, Chin ups, basically do all calisthenics. But if you are going to lift weights you have to do light wiehgts and long reps
Lifting stunting growth
IS THE BIGGEST OLD WIVES TALE EVER!!!!
Fact is, it won't STUNT ur growth but it COULD make you grow at a slower pace. Your growth spurts could come on later in life.
oh and you dotn stop fully growing til 21-22ish so as far as being under 16 and shit is BULLSHIT. If anyone tells you lifting weights STUNTS ur growth they are fucking clueless
