    Default Hey, Nice Shoes

Look closely at this picture. See anything disturbing? That's right, there's a pair of legs sticking out of a block of ice. What's more disturbing is that it took so long before anybody did anything about this.

Is a testament to the living conditions, huh. Detroit from what I hear...can be a cold place beyond the weather.

    And just plain cold too.

Few weeks back a friend of mine's uncle was found on the court house front yard in the morning, frozen stiff. He left a downtown bar after drinking at closing time to walk the 3 blocks back to his house. He made it one block and that where they found his body...face down frozen in it.

It's no different here than anywhere. People don't 'see' the homeless.

So you guys dont have a minimum unemployment benifit out there?

Here we we get 220 dollars per fortnight whoever you are if your out of work and looking for work.

This isnt nearly enough but hey its something and often there are share housing where a large group of homeless put in sometimes as low as 20 a week for a roof over their heads.

My friends in Melbourne work with the clinically scitzoid and depressed out on the streets and they go around offerering street kids accomadation and sometimes they actually have to hunt people down to give them their medication and its given to them right in the arm held down screaming or not.

LAst winter they offered a young kid accomadation for exactly 20 a week cause they found him shivering hugging his knees in an alleyway in Stkilda, the kid declined the offer and said he would sooner spend all his dole money on crack. So they left him.

Another guy I know is actually a multi millionaire and is by owning large amounts of cheap diralict housing that he rents out to the homeless,I belive he has a heavy in each set of flats that get his rent for free for collecting the rent off the others.

There's unemployment benefits here, but you have to jump through hoops to get 'em. I found myself unemployed for about 2 weeks last year. I immediately went on-line and did everything I had to do then I had to wait about 2 weeks for my time to call in to the automated system, MARVIN, and then a few weeks later I received a check. Now if you quit your last job you're ineligible and if you haven't worked in a certain amount of time you plain old can't get them. Maybe there's welfar a body could qualify for, but I don't know how that works. That being said, there are plenty of shelters here for the homeless to sleep and eat. There are also places that give medications. But the homeless population is so large that it's an impossibility to help everyone. When it got really cold a few weeks ago, there was a shelter that sent vans out to collect homeless people, but again, can't find everybody. Unless this was a body dump, I suspect this guy crawled into a spot to keep warm and wound up freezing to death.
