Default review of yesterdays mayweather public workout

was a bit of a letdown to be honest.

Got there at 3pm dead on and it was complete and utter chaos with no possible chance of seeing floyd due to this tiny area outside the gym being surrounded by about 750 people including those standing on walls on every possible side of the road and even the bridge up top was completely jam packed with people wanting to get a look.

By the time floyd entered the gym the masses started queueing on the door and it became an absoloute brawl to get inside. Several times over i found myself being pushed and shoved against our will and it was becoming completely ridiculous as people were trying every possible way to get to the front of this very tiny doorway.

By 3.45pm we were just about to hightail it out of there when after a few carefully planned phonecalls we managed to get in touch with a mate who works at TKO (rival gym in west ham) and he instructed us to meet him at the back entrance which we did.

Couldnt help but feel sorry for all those who turned up before us and were still out the front queueing to get in but they didnt end up missing a hell of a lot inside.

Once we got into a gym with no less than 70-80 people crowded around the room we had to make do with peaking through to see floyd on the pads and that was indeed the highlight of the workout as it peetered out once we got there to floyd working the bags and at that point because of the temperature inside the gym we decided it wasnt worth waiting another hour odd to get pictures signed.

Pros - Great publicity for a really hardworking gym that as brought through more boxers than any other gym in britain and has trained the very best.

Seeing the kids right at the front was great to see. Canning Town is very much a working class area and there isnt a hell of a lot of money about. Seeing the worlds greatest sportstar do what his best at will stick with them for years to come

Getting to see the greatest fighter in the world. No footie match can top that!!!

Cons - The whole thing just wasnt organised properly at all. There was no barriers, no security and no queues which would of ensured safety for all involved. One fella ended up passing out amongst the chaos and had to be taken back inside and can only hope he is ok.

Team Mayweather were flogging memorabilia such as posters and foam hands and many people bought them under the pretense they`d be able to get them signed. Ive heard that a few hardcores stayed till about 6 when floyd finally exited and the man was humble enough to sign a few but for the other hundreds that had to be somewhere it was not fair.

Peacock, Sky sports and steve bunce led everybody to believe at some point they would get to see floyd workout via a rotation policy that allowed 40 in 40 out every 15minutes or so. Can assure you that never happened and those that were lucky enough to get in got to watch the whole 2hours while those unfortunate enough not to have beat the queues or had friends in the know how had to spend 3hours outside under complete false pretences.

That sucks. Floyd on Sky even led people to believe he'd be signing a bunch of autographs to anyone who wanted one. Sounds kinda stupid that they didn't have security monitoring the situation.

Mayweather himself was pure quality, and made it worthwhile for all the kids & people who'd come from hoods all over London to see him, when he came out at the end & when he left. I was more impressed by his interaction with his fans than Hatton's which says a lot, and like I said in the other post it was all worthwhile in there.

My understanding was that the Mayweather memorabilia that was being flogged at the start was by those at Peacock gym who were an embarassment and should have given more information about what was goin on, (not some bloke leaning out & saying 'no one said it was a public workout' leading to carnage at the front). Honestly both Roger & Floyd both made a real effort to come out & talk to those of us who were stuck outside & I don't think any of us who were Mayweather fans were disappointed by them, but it did seem unfair that those with 'connections' basically got to sneak in the whole time, rather than allowing 50 people in for 15 mins at a time to see Floyd, especially when people were leavin coz of the heat. The most annoying thing was that the dickheads who rushed the door ended up leaving pretty soon once they put the shutters down, whilst many of us who had patiently waited before they started trying to charge in were stuck outside. I was irritated though when I realized my trainer had gone in with Ola Afolabi, and I could have just gone in with them

Still credit to Floyd for making it worthwhile in the end, and Paul, did you see his girl/ting/piece?

If a boxer holds an open workout, then it is his responsibly to the fans to make sure they all get to experience something, otherwise why bother. He should have presigned some photos and had them handed out after. He could have signed 750 photos before he left his house, it wouldnt have taken that long. He could ave signed them over a 5 day period if he didnt have much time. But, he chose to have an open workout. If his fragile hands couldnt handle it, then he shouldnt to puplic apearances at all.

Actually he did. He came out to talk to all the fans who had stayed for hours before he left & signed gloves & photos for as many as he could before his security ended it. I was there, and believe me those who had waited were not disappointed at the end, so he did try give everyone an experience. It is not his responsibility to organize the infrastructure of how people get into the gym & the information given out, that is solely down to the host gym. Roger Mayweather also came out earlier to talk to people, and both he & Floyd were far better with the fans than I've seen Hatton & Calzaghe being. Using this as another stick to try & beat Mayweather with is just stupid. It's worth checking the other thread, with the pictures that Floyd took with Smash's kid.

Hatton didn't sign any gloves when I met him at a sportsmans dinner last year. And his agent Paul Speak was charging £20 for pictures with him and wouldn't let anybody use there own camera. Fortunately for me I had VIP tickets.

David Haye on the otherhand was fantastic. Signed everything for me and everybody else. There was an occasion when he was talking with a reporter and some guy standing behind me rudely butted in and asked for a picture in the middle of an interview. Haye however said sure no problem and told the interviewer to wait while he posed for a pic. Great guy.

I know a few people who know David Haye, & they always say he's cool & down to earth like that, funny that he gets this rep as a guy who's up his own arse when he's the opposite. Something that was also apparent with how Mayweather acted the other day.

I remember seeing Hatton & he wouldn't even sign gloves for kids which I thought was kinda fucked up, although I try to put that more down to the people around him like Speak & Williams, & one of the guys at my gym said Calzaghe refused to take pictures with people in Vegas before the Mayweather-Hatton fight.

You didnt say any of that in your initial post, but good on him then if he did his part. I wouldnt knock him on that just cause im not a fan.

I can tell you Hatton is a top bloke i have met him at a book sigining and on a night out and both times, proper freindly and had time to have a chat to anyone, even had a bit of banter about getting beat in the Floyd fight.

Mayweather aswell is a top bloke my mates went Vegas around the Hopkins/Calzaghe fight and Mayweather was in one of the casinos in the vip having a little private party my mates started shouting him, they say proper welcoming guy and was proper bigging up the British fans and had loads of pics with them.

Hatton may be a top bloke without his entourage. But with them he's a dick.

It is interesting to hear that PBF is a top bloke. All you ever usually get is him being slated and people wanting him to be KO'd.

Anyway I was very interested to hear him say he was going to get a house in London and base himself hear. He did say, if I heard right, he would be fighting next in London. Does that mean he will not be fighting pac next as i can not see London staging a PBF v Pac fight. It will also be interesting to see who his opponent is if he does fight in London

I am sure a few posters that were at PBF's work out would disagree

During the pac-diaz workout in berkeley, Pac spend almost an hour signing authograph. it was all fun. No chaos. I don't think floydie has time like that to the fans.
Bad rep for bringing pac into a thread that has nothing to do with him.. I swear you pacerheads are the most insecure people ever.. Far be it for someone getting good publicity without you banging on about pac
