    Unhappy Canadian Amateur Boxing pre-1969

With the formation of the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association, it is like
a big dark wall has fallen between 1969 and those early years of
amateur boxing from British Columbia to Newfoundland.

From time-to-time, some of the old stuff may get mentioned such as
when individuals are inducted into a sports hall of fame, or in the
obit column of the local newspaper. But the web sites of Boxing Canada
to the various Provincial Associations are a little short on the pre-1969
stuff. One would have to dig pretty hard and long to find a few
bits and pieces on the likes of 1967 Canadian champions such as
Bill Taylor and Wayne Boyce or others.

Even the Golden Gloves and Diamond Belt Championships of past
decades are often buried deep in the archives of some group.

In recent months, I have attempted to document some of the history,
but there is so much missing or buried information in such places as
British Columbia and Alberta. One example is documenting the
history of the Nanaimo boxing scene from 1963 to 2009.
One of the troubling moments was when current boxers from
Nanaimo had no idea of the history of their own club and it's
early years from 1971 to 1978. And, how many know that
one of the 1980 USA Boxing team members killed in that
plane crash in Poland had fought in a tournament in Nanaimo in 1978.

Sometimes boxing is not about the glory or the gold, it is about
    the participation.

The attachment is only one all-star amateur boing card in Seattle in 1968,
but 12 stories of Canadian & Washington State boxers with different twists and turns.
But, for a moment in time we few 12 joined together to fight beneath the bright lights
    in dome facility in Seattle/

There was Fraser Scott who would be involved in that controversial bout
with Middleweight Champion Nino Benvenuti. Then there was Wilbur Seales,
brother of Sugar Ray Seales and part of
that great group of Tacoma Boxing Club members.

THE STORIES NEVER END - By Brian W Zelley

With the introduction of social networks such as the Sado Boxing Forum,
facebook, my space, twitter, bebo and the various boxing sites that now
also have group sites on places like facebook the past, present and future
    is s wide open field.

In the Canadian amateur boxing sites, we have ex-boxers from the Sixties
communicating with the new breed of young boxers like they like they
were long lost friends be they from Prince George, Edmonton, or some
town or village in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Saskatoon.

What is clear, there are thousands of stories to be told from past days.
another recent example is the case of the 2010 BC Golden Gloves
which will take place in April 16 and 17 th. in Langford on Vancouver Island
Through communication on a regular basis, there will be some old time
ex-boxers that will attend, but without the timely communication they likely
would have been left in the dark.

The event will be co-hosted by the Capital City Boxing Club and Boxing BC.
To focus the Golden Gloves, I will start a new topic. And anytime there
is boxing in BC, our friends in Alberta, ;Washington State and other
locations are always welcome. Some of the great moments in
BC Amateur Boxing history have included our friends from other
regions from RAY LAMPKIN (Portland), NEIL KNIGHT (Seattle) and
SCOTTIE OLSON (Edmonton) an others such as DONATO PADUANO,
ROCKY MARCIANO, JIMMY MCLARNIN, and even CHUCK ROBINSON
before his 1980 date with destiny and tragedy in Poland along with
other members of the ill-fated USA Boxing Team.
