    Default Boxing Perspective: Lucian Bute

Is the Super Six Tournament Lucian Bute’s blueprint to the super middleweight throne?

It is good to be a super middleweight these days. The division while having some great fighters throughout its years such as James Toney, Roy Jones Jr, Michael Nunn, Joe Calzaghe, Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn, for some reason has failed to keep up momentum like the welterweight, middleweight or even light heavyweight divisions.

Reasons such as not enough elite fighters campaigning at once, fighters at the tail end of their careers, hopefuls that never panned out or ones that even after becoming title holders remained fairly obscure to the mainstream media of the sport have all at one time or another helped hinder the division from being “The” place to be, even if for a short period of time.

Even when big name fights such as Jones vs. Toney or Eubank vs. Benn did take place nothing followed up to keep the public's interest peaked.

When Joe Calzaghe, who will probably go down as the best 168lb fighter in history due to his longevity and do... Full Boxing Article here...

    Good read, Daxx!

I'm quite a big fan of Bute's. I get rather sick of people playing up him not being in the Super Six as if he ducked the tourny. It's ridiculous.

As the cream rises to the top of the division, I'm confident Bute will be there.

Yes, but only as an opportunist imo. Much like how all the Roman infighting destroyed that mighty civilisation and allowed Alaric the Goth to move in and sack Rome.

He couldn't have hoped to conquer them without them destroying themselves first, and Bute may well reap similar benefits.

And this may very well be true. But at this point it's semantics. Bute is not in the Super Six. Should he fight the winner of the tourny and beat him then everyone will be screaming how smart he was to do what he did and take the rematch with Andrade where as right now he's being called and duck artist in some threads.

Being an inadvertant opportunist is fine by me.

No matter what, Bute has a much better record than Froch (for example) which only significative win comes over Taylor after a lucky knock out that did save the day for him and as we all know, he should have lost against Dirrell.
