Default How to beat Lou Del Valle

I know this seems like a very random thread, but one of my friends at the gym (a guy I used to spar regularly) is fighting old Lou this friday and I just want your opinions on how you would handle Del Valle. Please keep in mind that my friend is a pressure fighter, he has good stamina, he's more of a volume puncher, but he has a dodgey chin and instead of boxing (which he can do well) he's prone to standing right square in front of fighters.

I just want this info to compare against what he actually does and what his trainers tell him.

Thanks (by the way, I'm 2 degrees of separation from fighting Roy Jones Jr. Haha)

Wow Lou Del Valle? I haven't heard that name in a long time! I remember him catching Roy and putting him down (more Roys footing I thought at the time) but to be honest I can't really remember much more of him. Gonna see what I can find on him and come back to this one.

I think I know how I would fight him. Del Valle is a southpaw (I think) and he's more of a slick boxer than anything else. I would slip his jab and use the old Bert Cooper combo left hook to the body and left uppercut, but you have to beware the left cross when doing that and I would rather have a situation where I block the left cross as I'm throwing the hook and have the uppercut be a counter. But as with all southpaws you really want to establish the right cross and I think the left hook to the body diverts attention enough to leave that punch wide open.

I never found southpaws all that troubling to be honest.

I always found the straight right hand the punch that caused the southpaws most problems especially fighting from the outside. If your friend is more of a swarming fighter though and if he has decent head movement I can see how the L hook, Uppercut combo would be effective!

Del Valle fights with his lead hand low already so I think the hook to the body draws his attention towards protecting the body and a couple of things happen: 1. He shoots a left cross and you a) block and uppercut b) block and left hook c) slip outside and right cross 2. He covers up in which case you try to find a home with some combinations and then tie up to wear him down 3. He tries to tie you up, in which case a short right cross are in order 4. He hooks off the jab and in that case there's a big opening for the right cross.

Just my views on it in the manner in which I fight.

    Come on guys....let's have it!

How do you beat this guy? I want descriptions of how other fighters beat him and descriptions of how a swarming fighter like my good buddy could beat him. I know you guys have some ideas and theories.

If your boy is a swarming fighter than he must fight like a swarming fighter. He must get up in on him and just throw punches. Bully him. Del Valle is 42 years old. He can't keep up a modest pace. Much less a good, fast one. If your boy can keep up a fast pace than he'll be alright. Del Valle has never been stopped before. So hopefully your boy stamina is good. Cuz it's going to be an all nighter. Del Valle knows how to fight. His body just can't keep up any more. He'll be a threat for the first 2 rounds than he's done if the pace is fast. Your boy weak chin is a concern. But Del Valle ain't scored a stoppage in about 6 years. So unless your boy's chin is A Mere Con like he should be able to handle Lou's shots.

Ends up that the fight didn't happen and I heard a number of stories as to why...

    1. LDV was 2 pounds over weight
    2. LDV was 10 pounds over weight
    3. LDV was injured
    4. LDV was any one of the above AND didn't want to fight my buddy

Any way you slice it my friend missed out on a huge fight but earned himself a vacated belt and will hopefully defend it successfully in the future. My friend did come into the fight in excellent shape (as usual) and he had KO'd a few sparring partners in the gym (none of which were me ). I will hopefully keep going to the gym and resume sparring again in the near future...I'll let you know how that goes.

This is the only vid I could find of him...not his best work but you'll get the idea

    And here's his record
    Paul Jennette - Boxer

Not the best record, but he's a very good fighter for around NC, he has bad habits (re: in fight discipline, he squares up and chooses to exchange too often), but hell all fighters have a few weaknesses. But he always shows up in shape and always gives 100%...he can't be in a bad fight.
