Duran is nowhere near what he will become.

These guys weighed in same day and made 135. In today's terms they are likely featherweights.

I have seen this fight about 20 times and i still cant get enough , two fantastic boxers , Buchanan is the most underrated british boxer of all time , all young british fans should study this guy , because he was a technical genius he made the ring as if it was his back garden , he was fantastic , and a lovely man , but he came up against my favourite fighter ever , at lightweight HANDS OF STONE , in his prime was the most aggressive , fearsome , intimidating , devastating fighting machine ever , and i love the guy

This fight is always on ESPN classic. Duran is a beast but Buchanan is a very dood fighter too.

Duran likely would have won this fight anyway, but I always thought the low blow that ended the fight at the end of the 13th round tainted Duran's victory. It seemed strange, if it was a low blow, and Buchanan was unable to continue, that they never went to the scorecards? Not that Buchanan would have won on the scorecards, but awarding Duran with a TKO seemed a bit unfair.

Funny how there never was a rematch, perhaps Buchanan had, had enough of Manos de Piedra.

Back in the day boxing was simpler. If the ref didn't call a foul (and in this case he didn't) you continued or you lost. I saw Gil Clancy interviewed on this once and his attitude was yeah my guy got hit low, but he was pretty near the end of his rope anyway.

I have NO idea why there wasn't a rematch. The MSG crowd loved Buchanan and it would have sold out without question.

Duran just never got off his chest, just relentless. He must have made Lagunas rough housing in rematch seem a picnic. Nice hearing Dunphy..no hype men needed, no tag team network cronies. Simple!

These days, if the same thing happened, Buchanan would have been given up to 5 minutes to recover, and Duran might have gotten a point taken away.

I really believe that Buchanan not seeking a rematch speaks volumes, he didn't want anymore of Duran.

BTW, Buchanan's movement in the ring always looked peculiar to me, it was like he was walking on stilts or something.

Buchanan was a good fighter. But that's not what comes to mind first when his name is mentioned. First thing everybody remembers is his pitiful attempt to steal a fight he was getting his ass beat by claiming foul. It's unfortunate. But he has no one to blame but himself

Aside from Duran being ahead I don't know what they were offically. I had it 9 rounds to 3 Duran going into the 13th. 10 to 3 scoring the 13th. Either way Duran wasn't losing barring a knock out. Something Buchanan knew he wasn't capable of doing. Which let to him looking for the way out

According to Boxing Illustrated the ref had it 8-3-1, the judges 9-2-1 and 8-3-1 Duran after twelve rounds. Buchanan needed a KO to win.

I don't doubt Buchanan was hurt. But most of that hurt came from the punishment Duran was inflicting on him since the fight started. The act he tried to pull out at the end was disgraceful
