Default ESPN Boxing and the commentator. What happened?

I used to watch a lot of ESPN boxing here in the UK.

I watched an old Mike Tyson DVD set recently and it was all ESPN footage and a voice I used to hear.
The commentator seemed to be always on ESPN boxing. Very knowledgable and clearly loved boxing. AND he commentated on Tyson's debut onwards! Sometimes it almost looked like ESPN were shooting and commentating some of the fights from the (cheap) seats!

Does ESPN still figure in current boxing and what became of that excellent commentator?
This signiture is up as ante in a 'sig-bet'. Wanna bet anyone?

Barry Tompkins , Al Bernstein and Dave Bontempo were on ESPN in the 1980's so probably one of them?

if i had to guess i'd say Al Bernstein who was a brilliant commentator and used to do bits for this site years ago

Our American members will confirm for you sooner or later

Al and Tompkins were great together . Sad fact..somewhere I have an ancient tape of Bernstein trying his hand as a lounge singer

Al Bernstein was there for the early days of 'Top rank boxing' on ESPN, seem to remember he and Barry Tompkins being regulars until the format change and it becoming 'ESPN Friday night fights' in 1998. Airing on espn2. They have new contracts with PBC and GBP and are set to air regular cards this year. A card is on ESPN2 tonight actually!

We do not get these? I am sure Sky, BT Sport's and Boxnation must stop them broadcasting here.

You should drop them a line and tell em it's worth a watch. Of course Oscar and Haymon might be asking for a stiff amount?

Nobody stops another channel from showing boxing, BT/ESPN is joined over here so they'll show them if they choose, just like the old ESPN channel showed the fights delayed. Channel 5 used to show them every week years ago. Sky/BoxNation have to buy international content it's not free.

Golden Boy stream all their prospects shows for free.

I think I may have gotten confused with Eurosport.
The commentator was English for sure.

Eurosport? You mean the brilliant/nuts Steve Holdsworth. Hilarious commentator.

Don't know what happened to him but Eurosport had weekly moody live shows from all over europe (Tuesday nights) and showed tons of archive highlight fights from the states. That was the good old days before this internet lark. I can remember young Barrera, Holyfield, Roy, Tito, Gatti, Bowe etc. Holdsworth would commentate over the top of them already knowing the result.

Sure it was not ITV and Gary Newbon or Mike Costello?

Have you got the right sport?
