Margarito's aunt was killed in a car accident last Tuesday, and his 4-year-old cousin, who was in the vehicle, was seriously injured and is in critical condition.
The single-vehicle accident occurred in Oceanside at about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday off of northbound I-5, near the Mission Avenue onramp, Oceanside fire Battalion Chief Ken Matsumoto told San Diego's 10News.
A 35-year-old woman later identified as Margairto's aunt, Maria Ramirez, was killed and her child was seriously injured when their car veered off Interstate 5 and slammed into a tree, 10News reported.
Ramirez's 4-year-old son was thrown from the car in his child seat and was sent to Children's Hospital.
This tragic accident happened about 20 minutes after Ramirez left Margarito's home in Tijuana.
Margarito, who received the terrible news around midnight, informed his team on Tuesday morning that he
would most likely not be attending this weekend's event.
"This has hit my wife and I very hard," he told his manager Sergio Diaz. "Not only has a wonderful person passed away, but we are now waiting for the outcome of her 4-year-old child. He is stable, but still in intensive care.
"This is very unfortunate. My wife and I just saw her. This makes it more difficult on us because the accident occurred not too long after she left our house in Tijuana."
Diaz stated: "Although the team was looking forward to attending this weekend's event, we cannot pack up and
say 'Let's go'. We need to stay and give Fernando (the father and husband of those involved in the accident) and his family our support.
"We are well aware that it was important for us to be in Vegas this weekend, being there would help Antonio
get closer to making the Mayweather fight happen.
"We believe in our promoter. We know Top Rank can make things happen."
Diaz said that Margarito wanted to apologize to Arum and his fans, but he felt that he needed to be by the side his young cousin, his wife, and family during this difficult time.
