This is a bit of a shock. He had all the tools to make a run at the top again.

They live, We sleep
Really? That’s terrible if true. He was a good fighter. Maybe Beterbiev just took it all out of him.
Five years and done, maybe he'll come back. I guess Artur "nailed" him.![]()
All's lost! Everything's going to shit!
There must be a significant reason for him needing to retire. He was still a top class fighter.

Former world champion boxer Gvozdyk retires
The former world light heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk has retired, his manager said Wednesday.
Egis Klimas wrote on Instagram that ''he is retiring'' and wished the 33-year-old Ukrainian luck in his new career.
Gvozdyk won the WBC title in December 2018 when he knocked out Adonis Stevenson, who had held the belt for five years. His Canadian opponent suffered a brain injury in the fight in Quebec which left him needing surgery and long-term care.
Gvozdyk retained the belt in his first title defense when Doudou Ngumbu suffered a leg injury, but lost it last year in a stoppage loss to Russian fighter Artur Beterbiev. That was Gvozdyk's only loss of a 17-1 pro career.
Gvozdyk also won a bronze medal for Ukraine at light heavyweight at the 2012 Olympics.
Gvozdyk has previously spoken of his interest in moving into business and told Ukrainian website Tribuna last year that he would ''never say never'' to politics.

He reminds me of another eastern European fighter, Leonard Dorin, very similar case :
- Alexandr Gvozdyk : 5 years of pro after a brilliant amateur career, one gold medal at Summer Universiade and one bronze medal at Olimpics, WBC champ as a pro, retired at 33 years old after the first loss, by TKO, against Arthur Berbetiev.
- Leonard Dorin : two bronze medals at Olimpics, one gold at World Amateur Championship and one gold at European Amateur Championship, turn pro at 28 years old, WBA champ, retired at 34 after his first loss, by KO, against Arturo Gatti.
A rarity today but maybe just one of the ones who made sure he had other doors open. Also a tough couple of fights to be sandwiched between with Stevenson and Beterbiev. Put out an absolute pounding on one who defied odds and somewhat came back and then took a real battering himself before being finally stopped. Hope he does well for himself.
It will be difficult for any of us to go on after this news.
Beterbiev is the real deal. lol...
