"Collazo Stops Jerusalem After 7th Round, Becomes WBO 105-Pound Champ In 7th Fight"

"Oscar Collazo was more than ready Saturday night for a world champion despite his lack of professional experience.

The powerful, skillful southpaw battered Melvin Jerusalem over the final four rounds of their fight and stopped him after a one-sided seventh round at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California. After absorbing a lot of body shots, Jerusalem told referee Ray Corona that he didn’t want to continue after the seventh round of their WBO minimumweight championship match on the Alexis Rocha-Anthony Young undercard.

Collazo became a world champion in just his seventh professional fight, which made him the fastest fighter from Puerto Rico to win a recognized crown. The 26-year-old Collazo also improved to 7-0 (5 KOs).

The Philippines’ Jerusalem (20-3, 12 KOs) lost the WBO 105-pound championship he won in his previous fight. Jerusalem knocked out favored Japanese southpaw Masataka Taniguchi (16-4, 11 KOs) in the second round to win the WBO minimumweight championship January 6 in Osaka, Japan.

Jerusalem came out strong in the first three rounds, but Collazo took control thereafter.

Collazo clipped Jerusalem with a right hook with just under 50 seconds on the clock in the seventh round. He tried to finish his fatigued, hurt opponent, but Jerusalem made it to the end of the round.

The ex-champion had taken too much punishment, though, and declined to continue.

Jerusalem went down to his gloves and knees with 1:45 to go in the seventh round, but Corona ruled that Collazo pushed him down.

Collazo knew Jerusalem was hurt early in the seventh round, when he blasted Jerusalem with a left that wobbled him less than 35 seconds into it.

Collazo knew Jerusalem was hurt early in the seventh round, when he blasted Jerusalem with a left that wobbled him less than 35 seconds into it.

Collazo staggered Jerusalem with a straight left that made him stumble backward with about 45 seconds to go in the sixth round.

Collazo continued to attack Jerusalem’s body during the sixth round. His right hook to Jerusalem’s body was especially effective and prevented him from throwing many punches.

Collazo clipped Jerusalem with a straight left that seemed to buzz him with just over 1:50 on the clock in the fifth round. Collazo pressured Jerusalem for the remainder of the sixth round and landed hard head and body punches that kept Jerusalem from mounting much offense.

Collazo caught Jerusalem with a hard left to his body with just over 1:10 remaining in the fourth round. Collazo applied more pressure in the fourth round, when he made Jerusalem fight less effectively off his back foot.

Jerusalem landed a left hook several seconds before the third round ended. Jerusalem’s short right uppercut connected with just under 30 seconds to go in the third round.

Collazo caught Jerusalem with a right hook as Jerusalem moved backward with just over 40 seconds on the clock in the second round.

A straight left by Collazo backed up Jerusalem barely a minute into the second round. Jerusalem’s right hand landed about 40 seconds into the second round.

Jerusalem caught Collazo with a left-right combination with about 20 seconds to go in the first round. The defending champion’s jab kept Collazo at a distance for most of that opening round."
