no i think you're right about wide stances. specifically, the wider your stance the more your weight becomes spread out across each leg. when you transfer weight your weight has to become concentrated on only one leg. when you transfer weight you are essentially only standing on one leg. why would you want to spread out your weight evenly across each leg when you are ultimately trying to only stand on one leg? one spreads out your weight and one concentrates your weight. thats why you can't do both. because they both cancel each other out.
