If you intend to compete, at least initially. If youjust want to learn to box? No

How are you going to learn to box if when you get put in the ring to spar your so tired after 15 seconds that you can't think straight?

You need a certian level of fitness just to learn the technique. Forget standing still and practicing single shots and individual stances and defences, yes you need all that but unless you can put it all together whilst under attack its all worthless. only way to do that is to spar... only way to learn from sparring is to be fit and agile.

You say you are starting boxing but then you say all you want to do is defend yourself and learn how to basically street fight? Those are two different things I would have to say. All the situps, push ups, running, sprinting, eating healthy, it all comes as one. All or nothing.

They are all right, if you don't stick to everything they are teaching you, you will never have enough energy or strength to carry on. So just carry on with everything they want you to do because is in the end you will be thanking them.

If you just want to protect yourself, buy a gun.

If you want to take part in a noble sport, to compete with skilled athletes at a really basic level, if you think you have the willpower, toughness and discipline to first conquer yourself, if you want to truly understand yourself - then take up boxing.

But decide which one it is to be.

all these guys are right! Boxing, or defending yourself, either one is not for people out of shape!
