  • Boxing Spotlight: Wayland Willingham- A Future Full Of Potential!

Tonight junior welterweight Wayland Willingham, 9-0 (5), steps into the ring for the tenth time as a pro and will be looking to stay undefeated on the undercard of Pugnacious Promotions’ double header from the Conference Center in Saratoga Springs, NY. Headlining the bill are a quartet of heavyweights, Shannon Miller, 14-1 (8), vs. Malachy Farrell, 14-0 (11), and Vinnie Maddalone, 26-3 (19) vs. Jermell Barnes, 17-12-1 (4).

Just last year Willingham made his pro TV debut on the undercard of the riveting Shannon Miller vs. Vinnie Maddalone war, in a bout against Shakha Moore in which Wayland won by unanimous decision on ESPN2 on August 15 of 2005.

Willingham, a slick southpaw with a combination style that is reminiscent of Shane Mosley and Pernell Whitaker mixed together, will take on Damon Antoine, 4-9-1 (2), of Akron, OH. Willingham has been a busy fighter this year and will be stepping between the ropes for the third time in just six months. (more…)

  • Clinton Woods – Glen Johnson

Razor sharp Woods closes gym doors

IBF light heavyweight champion Clinton Woods has ordered the doors locked and the shutters down while he is training at his Gleadless, Sheffield gym.

Ordinarily, well-wishers and Sheffield school kids regularly stand inside the Morland Road gym and watch their Steel City champion spar or whack the heavy bags.

However, with the rubber match with Glen Johnson now only a fortnight away, Woods is preparing in absolute secrecy for his third fight with “the Road Warrior’ at the Bolton Arena on September 2. (more…)

  • Boxing Preview Analysis: Paul Williams – Sharmba Mitchell

In the biggest question to be asked in 25 year old Paul Williams’ career, “The Punisher” takes on 18 year veteran Sharmba Mitchell this Saturday on a HBO telecast at the Reno Events Center in Nevada. Williams, from Augusta, GA is undefeated in 30 professional bouts and came through his toughest test last time out in May against hardened Argentinean Walter Dario Matthysse in 10 rounds.

Sharmba Mitchell is 10 years Williams’ senior and is a World Championship veteran, winning his first 140 pound title back in 1998 against Khalid Rahilou. After an unfortunate injury loss to Kostya Tszyu in 2001, Sharmba battled his way into title contention with a dominant 12 round decision win over Ben Tackie in 2003.

Universally recognised as number two in the 140 lb division, the “Little Big Man” finally got his chance at redemption against the injury prone Tszyu in November 2004 but was blown away in three by the revitalised champion. (more…)

  • Boxing Preview: Evander Holyfield – Jeremy Bates

Tomorrow night at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, former four time world champion and two division undisputed champion Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield, 38-8-2 (25), takes on veteran journeyman Jeremy “The Beast” Bates, 21-11-1 (18), in a non-title heavyweight bout. The 43 year old Holyfield is returning to the ring after a two year absence and is looking to get back in the heavyweight mix and search for one more shot at a title.

Holyfield was stripped of his license to fight by the New York State Athletic Commission due to his poor performances in the ring and accumulated amount of punishment he received in his last six bouts. It was obvious that a fighter of Holyfield’s caliber had fallen too far and in order to save him from himself, it was decided not to let him box.

Holyfield had been showing signs of great deterioration; at times only producing 20 or less punches thrown in rounds and had become somewhat of a punching bag for other fighters. He had also showed signs of slurred speech and his erratic views of his own performances helped cement the commission’s decision. (more…)

  • What If? – Ricky Hatton vs. Three Welterweight Boxing Legends

    © Mike Cleary
As the title of this article states, this piece is about what would have happened if Ricky Hatton had had to face greats from the welterweight division from years gone by. I think the probability of what would have happened had Ricky been born at a time when it would have made it necessary for

him to have fought men named Hearns, Leonard and Duran, goes to show how he is no welterweight – this was proven even by Luis Collazo who, while a good fighter, is no legend. Clearly, Ricky must drop back down to light welter, if he wishes to regain his former dominance. But since he IS a world champion at 147, let’s compare him against three all-time greats who fought in the division in which “The Hitman” currently reigns. Boxers Ricky grew up watching and who he now idolises – especially in the case of Roberto Duran.

Ironically, I feel the man who he so admires in Roberto Duran is the one fighter of the three who Hatton would have had the best chance against. Duran, like Ricky, came up in weight to box as a welterweight. He actually won his first world title at lightweight, therefore his achievement of winning belts at both welterweight AND middleweight (with light middle thrown in for good measure) is quite remarkable. But then Roberto Duran was an exceptional fighting man. What then of Ricky’s chances against the man he rates as his number one boxing hero? (more…)

  • Boxing News: Israel Vazquez

Vazquez, winner of eight in a row, can hardly wait to defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight title against WBC bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez Sept. 16.

I’m feeling strong, feeling motivated. I know a lot of good will come my way if I win, but right now my focus is just him.” (more…)
