  • Boxing Result: Viloria In Shock Upset Loss

Last night at the Orleans in Las Vegas, WBC Light Flyweight Champion Brian Viloria waited for the perfect punch against challenger Omar Nino Romero but unfortunately for the pint sized body basher from Hawaii, that opportunity never came. After getting handled in the first round, the Guadalajara, Mexico based Romero, who nickname is the “Giant Killer”, simply swept by Viloria in a typhoon of effort and will. Romero kept applying pressure and throwing leather, keeping the normally aggressive Viloria off balance and unable to form an effective offensive strategy. Midway through the bout the champion did attempt to turn the tide in the seventh but Romero could smell the title by this time and wasn’t about to let Viloria back into the contest.

When the dust finally settled, Romero, 24-2-1 (10), was declared the victor by unanimous decision 118-110, 117-111 and 117-112. Viloria, 19-1 (12), suffers his first defeat and immediately called out for a rematch.

  • Hasim Rahman: Last American Standing

    courtesy www.frankmaloney.com

He didn’t know HBO commentator Jim Lampley well enough to be sitting on his lap, but was thankful for the cushy landing nonetheless. In the consistently mercurial career of two-time heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman, there tends to be almost as many highs and lows in the space of a year as one would expect fictional mob boss Tony Soprano to go through in an entire 14-episode season.

However, one night in particular stands out in the memory above all others; one which, for obvious reasons, is indelibly etched in our minds. No, it wasn’t his spectacular one-punch knockout victory over an overconfident Lennox Lewis in 2001, surprising though that may sound. His greatest moment? Without a doubt. His most memorable? Sadly, only a very close second. (more…)

  • WBC Boxing News: Garcia’s Family Trust At Risk

The World Boxing Council has received a plea for help from Maria Maza of Barranquilla, Colombia, the widow of former Colombian boxer Jimmy Garcia, who passed away in 1995 after challenging Gabriel Ruelas for the super featherweight world title at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

The WBC protects all boxers fighting for WBC titles with hospitalization and life insurance policies, and after that terrible evening when Jimmy Garcia died, the money from the life insurance policy was collected through a bank transference which required the presence in Colombia of WBC President Dr. Jose Sulaiman, who established a trust whose beneficiaries would be Garcia’s children Lizeth Estefania Maza Ruiz, Paula Andrea Maza Ruiz, and Jimmy Masmut Villalba, as well as their mothers, Maria Maza and Alba Luz Masmut. The weigh-in for Saturday night’s WBC Heavyweight title fight at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas was held today at Caesar’s Palace on the world famous Las Vegas Strip. Both fighters appeared in phenomenal shape as WBC Champion Hasim Rahman of Baltimore, MD, came in at 235 lb., while challenger Oleg Maskaev of Staten Island, NY, by way of Kazakhstan, came in at 238 lb.

Hardly an ounce of fat could be seen on either fighter, refreshing for today’s shaky heavyweight division. Maskaev and Rahman appeared calm and confident, neither fighter altering their gaze during an intense staredown. (more…)

  • Boxing Info: Mayweather To Fight Cory Spinks On November 4?

Strong indications say pound-for-pound king, Floyd Mayweather will box Corey Spinks in his next outing. The fight, already approved, sanctioning wise by the IBF, is being talked about for “Pretty Boy’s” November 4 pay per view commitment. Tentatively scheduled to take place at The MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the bout is a fascinating match-up. It seems Floyd is keen on moving up to light middleweight and challenging Spinks for his belt. The question
is, is 154 too high for Floyd?

Spinks is coming off a very good, albeit controversial win, over the excellent Roman Karmazin. Now a two time world champion, Cory will be no pushover for Mayweather. He has only been stopped once, by Zab Judah, and his fine and silky skills have seen him box his way to many superb victories.

One of them over Judah, in their first meeting. And Zab, in his fight with Floyd, was more than holding his own in the first half of the contest, before Mayweather came on to dominate late. But this was at welterweight; will the undefeated modern great be as effective up a division? (more…)

  • Boxing Result: Reid Gunned Down By Phillips In Leatherfest

Light Middleweight Verno Phillips kept the fire burning on his dreams to once again capture a world title by stopping a very tough Teddy Reid last night on a Banner Promotion at the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. Early on it was Reid trying to force Phillips into a brawl, bullying the shorter man into the ropes but ex-IBF/WBO World Champion stayed cool and began measuring his rival, connecting with a high percentage of his counter shots. By the sixth it was all out war with Phillips dialing in on his opponent’s roundhouse efforts and punching inside those wide, wild punches of Reid. By the ninth Phillips had succeeded in canvassing Reid with a spearing boy shot and the Baltimore man lost a point by spitting out his mouthpiece in a bid for a longer rest period. In the twelfth and final frame Phillips had Reid in dire straits along the ropes, forcing referee Gary Rosato to call a halt to the increasingly one sided affair at 2:04 of the round. With the win Verno Phillips moves closer to another title shot and improves to 40-10-1 (21) while Teddy Reid drops to 23-8-2 (17).

    By Rhun Leeding courtesy www.frankmaloney.com

Make A Serious Boxing Offer, Frank

After a protracted discussion in the media between Clinton Woods and Joe Calzaghe and their respective entourages, Woods believes a win in his upcoming fight would force promoter Frank Warren to make a serious offer for the fight. With Frank Warren being quoted as saying that a fight between Glencoffe Johnson and Calzaghe being “agreed in principle”, Woods believes he will throw a serious spanner in the works by defeating Johnson.

In a story on www.fightnews.com, Warren was quoted as saying: “If Joe is successful in this bout (14 October), and Glen Johnson defeats Clinton Woods on September 2nd in the UK, then they will both fight for the IBF light-heavyweight title early in 2007. That deal has been agreed in principle for the winners of both fights coming up and represents a great incentive to both of them.” (more…)

  • The Boxing Fans Guide To The Welterweight Division

Looking at today’s welterweight division, one may be reminded of the status once only reserved for the heavyweight division of yesterday. Between 140-147 lb. lays a hotbed of pound for pound greats, and a myriad of up and coming prospects who are bound to take the boxing world by storm. Lately, recent propositions, deals, and rumors have shuffled this deck, putting the division in disarray. With this article, Saddoboxing.com will attempt to put things in order before confusion turns the average fan away.

The Welterweight Champion: Carlos Baldomir, Santa Fe, Argentina, 43-9-6 (13)

When Carlos Baldomir took the crown from former welterweight champion, Zab Judah, he single handily shook up a once solid division. After many naysayers dismissed the upset as merely a fluke, Baldomir picked up where he left off, stopping Arturo Gatti in nine rounds and putting all doubt to rest. Holding the IBF, IBA, and The Ring Magazine title, the most prestigious of all belts, Baldomir is now recognized as the welterweight to beat.
