  • Boxing Preview: Phillips and Reid Clash In Crossroads Showdown

It’s the fight game’s equivalent to a high noon gunfight at the last chance saloon tonight when Verno Phillips and Teddy Reid gets to grips on a Banner Promotions bill at Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Officially the prize up for grabs is the little known Trans America Middleweight title belt on this ESPN telecast but really what’s at stake here is the future career viability of each fighter.

Phillips, 39-10-1 (20), has the better pedigree as a former IBF and WBO Light Middleweight Champion but is facing a dangerous, unpredictable boxer in the form of Teddy Reid. While his trophy case can’t match that of Phillips, Reid, 23-7-2 (17), is a past NABF Welter and USBA Light Welter beltholder. (more…)

  • Muhammad Ali’s Impact On Boxing

    Courtesy www.frankmaloney.com

There he was, the dancing master, shuffling up the steps as though battling through an invisible blizzard, his clasp on the flickering torch heartbreakingly compromised by hands that shook uncontrollably. For over two decades, from his professional debut in 1960 as a scrawny teenager to that profoundly sad wintry night in 1981 when he made his ill-fated comeback against Trevor Berbick, Muhammad Ali lit up the sporting world’s colourless landscape like a metropolis of scorching stars.

The immensely poignant image of him setting light to the Olympic flame some 15 years after his retirement still resonates in my memory and was perhaps the moment when the most famous fighter of all, a man who partook in some of the most brutal encounters in ring history, became a worldwide symbol of love, hope and peace; a walking paradox who transcended sport, nationality, race and religion like no other. • Boxing Experts: Briggs Could Pull Upset!

    By Andre Courtemanche

Judging by his comments during the Ike Quartey/Vernon Forrest fight last Saturday, HBO color man Larry Merchant doesn’t think much of Shannon Briggs’ chances against Wladimir Klitschko in their proposed showdown for the IBF Heavyweight Championship (scheduled for November 11 in New York City).

Some of the top trainers in boxing say they disagree. A quick sampling of ten of the sport’s best reveals that most give Briggs a surprisingly good chance at springing the upset. (more…)

  • Boxing and Television

    By Tom Donelson

Ringsports.com Jack Hirsch challenged a little bit of conventional wisdom, namely that golden age of boxing was in the distant past. How often do we hear, “the golden era of boxing on television was in the 50’s, 60’s or even the 70’s and early 80’s.” Mr. Hirsch believes that we are living in the golden age of boxing and television. • Boxing Interview: Jose Antonio Rivera

    By Mike Casile www.Philaboxingreport.com

“I’ll challenge anybody at 154lbs, and ill take them out”

Jose Antonio Rivera is the WBA light middleweight champion, who won his title in a convincing fashion, knocking his opponent down five times. He is a legitimate contender for a big pay day, but no one will touch him. He has made overtures to De La Hoya, and Margarito, and others, but all he hears is crickets. He gets very little respect for a man holding a world title, and he feels that there is only one reason he can not get a big fight, and that is Fear.

    PBR:
Why do you think you’re so far under the radar?

    Rivera:
There were a couple of big opportunities that I missed. I was supposed to fight Fernando Vagas, before he fought Campos in 1998, and I hurt my wrist. I think HBO has always held that against me for reason, because I haven’t been given the opportunity since. Then there was the Mayorga thing, he didn’t make weight, so they found him another opponent. What about me? (more…)
