It was a riveting storm of leather last night at London’s mecca of boxing York Hall as Billy Corcoran and Carl Johanneson went to war over the vacant British Super Featherweight title in the main event of a Hennessy Sports promotion. Corcoran, of Galway, Ireland but residing in London, surprised many at ringside when he opted to get into the trenches with the more experienced Johanneson, of Leeds. The work inside was furious with Corcoran arguably landing more shots by focusing on short punches but Johanneson was scoring the heavier blows.
In the end it was the tighter defense of Johanneson that made the difference as he began picking off much of Corcoran’s efforts while homing in his own armoury with much better results. In the fourth, a neat three punch combination hurled Corcoran into the ropes and Johanneson’s follow up attack convinced referee Ian John Lewis to call off the bout.
Carl Johanneson, 24-2 (17), becomes the new British Super Featherweight Champion while brave but outgunned Billy Corcoran suffers his first loss in over three years and drops to 14-2-1 (5).
John Murray was also on the card and increased his unbeaten record to 17 wins with a 6th round TKO win over Billy Smith.
