In a clash of former world champions, Eric Aiken and Cruz Carbajal went 10 rounds last night at Rockingham Park in Salem, NH and when the dust finally settled the two featherweights proved inseparable on the scorecards.
In a seesaw battle that featured many positive moments for both combatants, Carbajal’s experience looked to be the deciding factor until the 32 year old from Veracruz, Mexico began to tire and Aiken pushed forward in the later rounds to force a draw on the scorecards.
Carbajal, 28-13-2 (24), had stepped in to face Aiken at the last minute when original opponent Valdemir Pereira didn’t clear mandatory medical tests for what would have been a rematch and an official IBF Featherweight title eliminator.
During a savage festival of low blows and knockdowns, Aiken, 16-5-1 (12), defeated Pereira a year ago by DQ to annex the IBF title but in his first defense, the Ohio native lost the belt to current champ Robert Guerrero.
Carbajal held the WBO Bantamweight crown through two defense from 2002 to 2004 but lost an IBO title bid when outboxed by Silence Mabuza in May, 2005.
