The minute it had been announced that Cory Spinks would be the next opponent to challenge WBC/WBO Middleweight Champion Jermain Taylor, many predicted that the resulting bout would be a sleeper in the worst sense of the word.
And critics of the matchup were right; the fight last night at the Fedex Forum in Memphis, TN was anything but as southpaw challenger Spinks used his foot speed to mostly stay away from the much larger Taylor and kept the champion from mounting any type of sustained offense.
When it was all over, one judge favored Spinks' run and peck style 117-111 while the two others sided with Taylor's chase and don't punch strategy, 115-113 and 117-111.
Taylor, 27-0-1 (17), keeps his titles against Spinks, who drops to 36-4 (11), and maybe now the Arkansas based champion will put a stop to the trend that has seen him face much smaller light punching light middleweights over his last two fights.
