March Date Set For Stoke Boxing EventBy Boxing Press January 23rd, 2008 All Press ReleasesStoke-on-Trent’s professional boxing promotion and management outfit, Impact Boxing, have announced that their next event will take place at the city’s Kings Hall on 1st March. The show will feature seven bouts with lightweight hopeful Scott Lawton headlining. Lawton who suffered defeats to both British champion Jon Thaxton and Commonwealth champion Amir Khan last year in attempts to secure a major title will continue rebuilding his career against an, as yet, unidentified opponent. Lawton is still considered by some pundits as one of the UK’s leading lights in a hotly contested lightweight division and he has his sights firmly set on another assault on the British title. “Many people were frustrated with my performance against Khan and I was bitterly disappointed myself,” said Lawton. “I think Amir’s last win against Graham Earl puts my performance into perspective. Earl’s a former British and Commonwealth champion and a tough cookie to boot; many people expected him to give Amir a tough night. To be stopped so quickly just illustrates how good khan is.” “I acknowledge that I was never in the fight against Khan and it was the first time in my career that I’d had that feeling. Against Thaxton however I always thought I had a chance of winning until I got that cut and I’d love to have a re-match with him this year.” “Despite the two defeats I also feel that I learned an awful lot from the experience and I am certain that this will stand me in good stead if I get another opportunity. In the meantime I will concentrate on climbing back up the rankings until my chance comes.” Local favourite Jimmy Doherty will seek to extend his unbeated record to 8 – 0 and Werrington heavyweight will look to secure his fourth consecutive victory since joining the pro ranks. Ibbs produced the performance of the night last time out when he prevailed over the much more experienced Lee Mountford. Scott Miller of Birches Head will look to continue his winning start having defeated Karl Taylor in his debut in November. The popular Chester duo of Chris Goodwin and Kevin Buckley will also return to the Kings Hall and will be joined by debutant super-featherweight Paul Economides. Paul, of Greek Cypriot heritage, served most of his amateur career at Shotton ABC and emerged with a creditable better than 50% record from 45 bouts.
