Exclusive Boxing Interview: John Murray

By Mike Taylor December 8th, 2006 All Boxing Interviews

Twenty-one year old John Murray is one of Britain's top up and coming fighters, carving out an unbeaten record in eighteen starts, finishing half of those opponents early. The tall Manchester based lightweight has impressed audiences in both America and Canada and has already won the WBC Youth Lightweight Champion. Promoted by Hennessy Sports, the red hot prospect is on the verge of contending for bigger and better things.

SaddoBoxing: First of all John, congratulations on winning the Boxing Writers Club "Young Boxer of the Year" award; you must be pretty pleased?

John Murray: "Yeah I am mate, I went down there and I'm just over the moon to have won it, it was a really good event too, there was some great guys there."

SB: With winning that award, you follow in the footsteps of some great boxers such as Barry McGuigan, Nigel Benn, Joe Calzaghe, Naseem Hamed and Ricky Hatton among others. They all went on to become world champions, do you hope to follow them further and become world champion yourself?

JM: "Yeah, we're looking towards moving in that sort of direction. I'm the WBC Youth Champion now, were looking at defending this youth belt a few times and work up the light-weight ratings and hopefully securing a world title shot in the next few years." More...

Rugged British Light Middle Champion Jamie Moore is set to defend his title against Matthew Macklin on 29 September at the GH Carnell Centre in Manchester, England on a Maloney Promotions bill. The Salford, England native spoke to SaddoBoxing on many subjects in this exclusive, can't miss interview.

SaddoBoxing: First off, I hear you're the first Salford boy to win the Lonsdale belt in over 100 years. That’s quite an achievement, you must be a bit of a hero back home?

Jamie Moore: "Yeah, everyone seems to know me here, I’m like a local sort of hero and it’s good to know…. A lot of the older guys from Salford are all big boxing fans and they’ve all said to me that they never thought they’d see anyone from Salford win the Lonsdale belt. So I’m glad really that I never knew about that fact before the fight, Steve Foster was the last person from Salford to fight for the British title, but he lost. He got straight in the ring after the fight and told me, (that Moore had won the Lonsdale belt) as he didn’t tell me before hand and I’m glad in a way." More...

European Light Welterweight Champion Junior Witter faces ex-WBO Champion DeMarcus Corley this Friday at the Alexandra Palace in London, England on a Hennessy Sports promotion televised by Sky Sports. With the winner of this bout annexing the WBC title, it's

the biggest fight of Junior Witter's life. Despite the enormity of the occasion, the ambidextrous power puncher from Bradford, England, 33-1-2 (19), took time out of his busy training schedule to speak exclusively with SaddoBoxing.

SaddoBoxing: You have an impressive record with your only loss coming against Zab Judah on points; did you learn much from that fight?

Junior Witter: "Yeah, I learned a hell of a lot from that fight. It showed me really how good I was, what I was; basically, it showed me what I was doing right and were I was going wrong. Since then, I've come away and learned from that. I've worked on my power and brought the power through. The speed, accuracy, timing was already there, I am a completely different fighter than I was that day." More...

At a press conference held by promoter Chris Sanigar the air in Plymouth was chilling but as Scott Dann and Larry Sharpe met for the first time ahead of their match-up for the vacant commonwealth middleweight title the heat was building.

Plymouth born boxer Scott Dann was as usual full of confidence and looking in tremendous shape, “I feel a lot physically stronger than I have before and am happy with how all my training has gone.” More...

Scott Dann is one of the pound for pound hardest hitters in European boxing and we were fortunate enough to catch up with the British Middleweight Champion from Plymouth, England and his manager/promoter, Chris Sanigar, as the two were preparing for Scott's next appearance at the Pavilions in Plymouth on 10 February. After an intense training session, we sat down with both

Scott and Chris and you won't want to miss this fascinating look behind the scenes, to be found only on SaddoBoxing.com

SB: Firstly Scott, according to your own website, James Obede Toney has pulled out as he couldn't make the weight. Do you have any thoughts on this?

SD: "I was a bit disappointed really, I would have liked to have fought James Obede Toney, with him being the Commonwealth Champion. I think it's bad preparation on his behalf; he's had plenty of time to get ready for the fight. I mean, I'm a lot heavier than a middleweight and I manage to make the weight so I can't see what the problem is." More...
