WBA Super Middleweight Champion Anthony Mundine's desire to fight the winner of the Joe Calzaghe vs. Mikkel Kessler bout may have to be put on hold after a severe eye infection has left the Sydneysider with no vision in one eye.
The 32 year old is expected to remain in hospital for up to ten days after his eye became infected from reportedly cleaning one of his contact lenses with his mouth.
"They're just fighting a severe infection at the moment," his manager Khoder Nasser said, (Fox Sports reports). The infection's that severe they're just going to have to fight that first before they can tell what's going on.
"He's definitely going to be in hospital for at least the next seven to 10 days, that's a minimum. It's pretty serious, that's why he's in bed in hospital."
Asked if Mundine had any vision out of his left eye, Khoder replied: "At the moment no, not at all." More...

Floyd Mayweather Jr is set to cut short his retirement and return to the ring for a super-fight against the unbeaten Ricky Hatton on December 8 following the UK fighter's comments last month.
Hatton recorded his 43rd victory and 31st knock-out when he stopped Jose Luis Castillo, the former WBC lightweight champion, in four rounds in Las Vegas on June 23.
After the bout Hatton was reported as saying that, "You saw more excitement in those four rounds than you've seen in Floyd's whole career," which Mayweather 38-0 (24) believes is a lack of respect and has hastened his return.
"I think he just wants to hear himself talk," Mayweather said to USA TODAY. "He got in front of the media and called my name out. He didn't think I was going to respond, but it doesn't work like that. I've accomplished too much in the sport for him to disrespect me." More...

Ajose Olusegun claimed his first title by unanimously out pointing Gary Reid to win the vacant Commonwealth light welterweight crown at Crystal Palace in London on Friday night.
The Nigerian born 27 year old was heavily favoured to defeat Reid, a Jamaican born Stoke on Trent resident, but was forced to raise his game to contain his gallant opponent.
Reid, 34, appeared to show his rival excessive respect as Olusegun increasing got through his defence and, combined with the favourite’s bewildering speed, an early stoppage seemed likely.
Reid survived the early assaults and rallied gamely at the midway point of his most important fight to date and gained many admirers for his valiant performance in the latter rounds.
“As you know, I have been waiting for this for a long time,” Olusegun said of his 119-110; 119-109; 120-109 victory. More...

The weigh-in for the vacant Commonwealth light welterweight title took place at Frank Maloney’s South London Fitness Academy yesterday afternoon.
Only one pound separated the principals when they stepped on the scales amid the buzzing atmosphere today as Stoke on Trent resident Gary Reid came in at 140 lbs to Ajose Olusegun’s 139 lbs.
In the past week Reid’s team have said they had “come up with a strategy that we feel will exploit the weaknesses that we have identified in his [Olusegun’s] game” and Reid elaborated further today when he said:
“I will do my talking in the ring but I have been practicing my body punches. I plan to break him down with body punches”
“Tomorrow we will see,” the smiling, and still unbeaten Olusegun said. More...

Frank Maloney has announced two great shows for British boxing fans in the lead up to the summer holidays. A new venue for Sky’s Friday Fight Night is introduced as Martin Power clashes with Jason Booth to decide the British Bantamweight title on July 6 at Wigan’s Robin Park Arena.
Also sharing the top billing is Britain’s best light middleweight Jamie Moore who fights South Africa's Vincent Vuma in a 12 round international.
Jamie continues his search for a major title in his second top-class international fight of the year when he meets Vuma who will be looking to set his European record straight following his loss to Reda Zam Zam in Copenhagen four years ago.
The action continues at Barnsley seven days later when British super featherweight champion Carl Johanneson seeks sweet revenge over Leva Kirakosyan. Johanneson’s sole loss in the past four year was to the Armenian born 33 year old and sparks will fly when the pair meet to decide the European super featherweight title on July 13. More...

The boxing world’s eyes will be focussed on the light welterweight division’s two world title fights this month.
First up is Paul Malignaggi’s clash with Lovemore N’dou for the IBF title on June 16 and a week later Ricky Hatton, Britain’s hero and top pound for pound fighter, takes on Jose Luis Castillo for the IBO equivalent.
But while these undoubtedly high class bouts are taking place Ajose Olusegun, the light welterweight division’s best kept secret, finally has the opportunity to fight for a title on June 15 at Crystal Palace’s National Sports Centre.
The British based Nigerian has waited 18 months for this opportunity and must be commended for his patience as other less talented fighters would have become infuriated with the politics and bad management he has suffered. More...

Tshifhiwa Munyai makes his fourth UK appearance in 12 months when he fights at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on June 15 and the Johannesburg resident’s return to the Capital is good news for London’s boxing aficionados following his previous three victories.
The unbeaten Martin Power, then 19-0 (8,) was the Chelsea supporter’s first UK scalp in June 2006 when Munyai stepped in as a late replacement for the injured Ian Napa in a Commonwealth Bantamweight title clash.
“We were offered the 2006 fight on a Friday and we arrived in the UK the following Monday and fought on Thursday", Munyai’s trainer Robert Macleod said.
Munyai, 21, exceptionally tall for a bantamweight at almost six feet, was then a virtual unknown boasting a career record of 10 wins and a draw from 11 bouts and surprised many by stopping the previously unbeaten Martin Power in the ninth round. More...

Junior Witter completed the first defence of his WBC light welterweight title in effective rather than outstanding style last night when he stopped Arturo Morua, saying afterwards that he will fight Ricky Hatton "as soon as he wants".
At a buzzing Alexandra Palace, Witter pounced mid-way though round nine with a vicious combination which effectively finished Morua. Following a standing eight count, referee Timothy Adams surprisingly allowed the bout to continue. Sensing victory Witter attacked immediately, throwing combinations that Morua could not defend and Adams this time did not hesitate to stop the fight two minutes into the round.
Witter, now 35-1-2 (20), had started slowly and appeared troubled by Morua's highly unexpected counter-punching tactics. "We were expecting him to come forward," said Witter. "He was a smart man. He tried to confuse me."
Witter's trainer, Dominic Ingle, was noticeable in the champion's corner at the end of rounds one and two as he indicated rather than talked tactics with the 32 year old Bradford resident. More...

SCOTLAND'S Barry Morrison last night scored a controversial 12-round split decision over Lenny Daws for the British light welterweight title, despite being wobbled numerous times down the stretch.
Fighting on the undercard of Junior Witter's title defence against Arturo Morua, both fighters sought to impose his will early on. It was Daws, though, who seemed to have the greater success, catching Morrison with well-timed punches on the inside.
In close, Morrison unleashed his trademark hooks but could not penetrate his opponent's high gauard, the majority of his powerful blows ricocheting off arms and elbows. However, though Daws was countering effectively in the early going and seemed to land the higher percentage of punches, Morrison's offensive outbursts were far more eye-catching, making the rounds difficult to score. The rematch between James 'Lights Out' Toney and Samuel 'The Nigerian Nightmare' Peter takes place on January 6 and Toney, controversially defeated in the initial bout, has blanked it from his mind.
And 'Blank' with a capital 'B' is now a significant part of Toney's daily routine since Billy Blanks, the renowned fitness guru, began employment as the 38 year old's conditioning trainer.
Los Angeles resident Blanks, himself a Golden Gloves and seven time world Karate champion is renowned as both the creator of Tae Bo, the phenomenally successful exercise regime that combines martial arts and music; and for being a hard task master.
We do not do Tae Bo, we do war," said Toney of his new trainer on a recent conference call. "He trains me everyday and before I was not training too hard because when I got home I would not be sleepy. But believe me now I am! Now I just try to get home and get to that bed."
Blanks, who has previously worked with a string of top sportsman and celebrities such as basketball stars Magic Johnson and Shaquille O'Neill, was brought in after Toney (69-5-3, 43 KO's) dropped a wafer-thin decision to the 27-1 (22 KO's) Peter in their WBC final eliminator, which took place on September 2.
