I think the pic looks funny...Chagaev is so damn short...
Chagaev, Sturm set to defend!
Ten days before the July 5th "Universum Champions Night" billed as "Night of Rematches" WBA world champions Ruslan Chagaev and Felix Sturm are putting the finishing touches on their conditioning at the famed Universum Gym in Hamburg.
Chagaev will defend his heavyweight championship against seven-foot Nikolai Valuev and Sturm will defend his middleweight belt against Randy Griffin. Both world champions are now nearing the end of the intensive training phase according to the Universum trainer Michael Timm.
Chagaev is highly motivated and focused as never before. The Uzbek, who is now based in Hamburg, is not leaving anything to chance in the defense of his world title.
"At first, it was a surprise for many that I won," said Chagaev, who handed Valuev the first defeat of his career in April. "This time I will once again prove that I deserve the title." The champion added, "With one punch it can all be over and the dream ended. But I feel well prepared, well trained and also have some different tactics."
In preparation for the "Russian Giant," Chagaev's trainer Michael Timm lined up four sparring partners for Chagaev with an average height of 6'8, the tallest being Julius Long, who's actually an inch taller than Valuev. Although focused on Valuev, Chagaev's major goal remains. "I want to win the heavyweight belt of all four world organizations," says Ruslan.
This confidence is shared by Sturm, who prepared for the "Night of the Rematches" at PlusOne in Cologne before moving his camp to Hamburg's Universum Gym. Sturm was impressive in one of the last training sessions, demonstrating his tremendous work ethic. As the three-time champion knows: the price is sweat. Whether it's shadowboxing, hitting the bags, or endlessly riding the exercise bike, the 29-year-old always goes full out. "I feel very good and will clearly win and defend my title," proclaims Sturm.
Trainer Michael Timm appears satisfied with the current preparation of both fighters. "It's been enormous fun," he said. "Ruslan and Felix have both done superb work and are in top condition."
Just by the look of Sturm his KO record should be higher than it is...
