Default Chagaev, Sturm set to defend! Chagaev is out, because of injury !!!

I think the pic looks funny...Chagaev is so damn short...

    Chagaev, Sturm set to defend!

Ten days before the July 5th "Universum Champions Night" billed as "Night of Rematches" WBA world champions Ruslan Chagaev and Felix Sturm are putting the finishing touches on their conditioning at the famed Universum Gym in Hamburg.
Chagaev will defend his heavyweight championship against seven-foot Nikolai Valuev and Sturm will defend his middleweight belt against Randy Griffin. Both world champions are now nearing the end of the intensive training phase according to the Universum trainer Michael Timm.
Chagaev is highly motivated and focused as never before. The Uzbek, who is now based in Hamburg, is not leaving anything to chance in the defense of his world title.
"At first, it was a surprise for many that I won," said Chagaev, who handed Valuev the first defeat of his career in April. "This time I will once again prove that I deserve the title." The champion added, "With one punch it can all be over and the dream ended. But I feel well prepared, well trained and also have some different tactics."
In preparation for the "Russian Giant," Chagaev's trainer Michael Timm lined up four sparring partners for Chagaev with an average height of 6'8, the tallest being Julius Long, who's actually an inch taller than Valuev. Although focused on Valuev, Chagaev's major goal remains. "I want to win the heavyweight belt of all four world organizations," says Ruslan.

This confidence is shared by Sturm, who prepared for the "Night of the Rematches" at PlusOne in Cologne before moving his camp to Hamburg's Universum Gym. Sturm was impressive in one of the last training sessions, demonstrating his tremendous work ethic. As the three-time champion knows: the price is sweat. Whether it's shadowboxing, hitting the bags, or endlessly riding the exercise bike, the 29-year-old always goes full out. "I feel very good and will clearly win and defend my title," proclaims Sturm.
Trainer Michael Timm appears satisfied with the current preparation of both fighters. "It's been enormous fun," he said. "Ruslan and Felix have both done superb work and are in top condition."

Just by the look of Sturm his KO record should be higher than it is...

Wacko's a huge fan of Sturm...I have no shame in broadcasting that lil' tid bit...but I am a bit disappointed in the fact that he has'nt stepped it up lately. I know that he's had alot of issues & what not...but it's time.

First & foremost...squash the Euro rivalry with Abraham.

The thing is...I know both fighters & what they are capable of. Sturm has so much untapped potential it's unreal. The thing is...it's his own fault...not his trainner's or anything like that. Sturm's got that bias over EVER coming to America due to the Oscar robbery & the fact that it was him that should have faced Hopkins.

It's a crying shame...but you can't cry over spilt gotdam milk.

In the end...I have to say that Sturm seems to be on a down hill slide on the mental side of things. I would'nt be shocked if Griffin pulled it out on him. I was happy as a pig in shit with the fact that he gutted Castillejo in their rematch...let's hope it happens in duplicate this go 'round.

Nahhh...Sturm just had condition problems against Griffin...I mean he fought 3 times in half a year(all 12 rnd fights)..that was too much,he even said so himself...And still I had Sturm winning by one rnd...Anyway...it won't happen again...this time Sturm by UD or even (t)ko...

And after that he should either figth Sylvester or again travel to the US to fight someone there...my dream opponent for Sturm would be Winky...

It's on eastside that Chagaev is out with a ripped archilles tendon, he'll be out for minimum 6 months if true sending the division into further dissarray.

    Thanks for the heads up.

If Chagaev tore his Achilles, then he's likely done for good.

You are right...this sux big time...

    More bad luck for Chagaev!
WBA champion tears Achilles tendon in left foot during last sparring; WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm will now headline July 5 card

The much anticipated rematch between WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev and Nikolai Valuev unfortunately cannot take place on July 5.
This afternoon, in his next-to-last round of sparring, Chagaev suffered a serious injury.
"He tried to step back with his left foot and I heard a "bang," said trainer Michael Timm. "At that moment, I already feared the worst."
Chagaev was immediately transported to the St. George General Hospital in Hamburg, where an MRI revealed a complete tear of the Achilles tendon. An operation is unavoidable. According to the treating doctors, Dr. Ehnert and Dr. Eggers, this will take place on Monday.
"Even though this is a bad injury, there is a positive note," said Dr. Michael Ehnert. Because the tendon has not torn directly above the heel bone, but almost concentric, a faster healing process is possible."
With this diagnosis, all involved parties are sure that Chagaev can return to the ring by the end of this year.
The champion was stunned and near tears. "It is the worst disappointment of my sporting career," said Chagaev. "But, I'll come back!"
It is the second time the Chagaev-Valuev rematch was postponed. They were originally scheduled to fight on May 31st, but the bout was pushed back to July 5th after Chagaev came down with an illness and was forced to break off sparring.
The July 5th "Universum Champions Night" event in Halle/Westfalen, originally billed as "Night of Rematches" has now become "Night of the Rematch" headlined by Part II of world champion Felix Sturm (29-2-1, 13 KOs) against Randy Griffin (24-1-3, 12 KOs) for the WBA middleweight title.

OUCH! Complete tear I can't imagine how that feels. I've had tendinitis in my achiles and it hurts so much, I couldn't imagine rupturing them or completely tearing them. That gym must have been fucking devastated, because that is one of the worst injuries an athlete can ever suffer. To bad.

Really...seem that the people around Chagaev and Chagaev himself are quite optimistic...

"Even though this is a bad injury, there is a positive note," said Dr. Michael Ehnert. Because the tendon has not torn directly above the heel bone, but almost concentric, a faster healing process is possible."

6 months for a clear tear doesn't sound realistic. Now granted I've only taken 2 sports medicine classes so I'm not exactly an expert but I don't think I've heard of any athlete coming back that quickly from that so quickly.

Training again in 6 months maybe but I would be surprised to see him in the ring for at least 9 months, you have to be so careful with that type of injury, he would be stupid to rush back, could end his career

Oh man I hate these injury stories so much.
