The thread about the confederation flag got me thinking. Large numbers of people must have thought slavery was ok and just.
I know as time passes people look and think differently about things but how did people justify slavery at the time?

Balls
It was always used....by everyone ever before that time but even Confederates had consciences and some like Stonewall Jackson were conflicted, some like Robert E. Lee freed slaves. Slavery wasn't solely a white issue either. In 1860 Charleston, 120 black people owned slaves. Slavery was the norm with the Indians, norm with Arabs, norm with African tribes and still occurs in various places.
Slavery would have been outlawed shortly after the War of Secession regardless of the victor.
Slavery wasn't outlawed in certain parts of Africa until the 1990's and it still goes on today. In Rome they had more slaves than free people. England brought slaves to the colonies so it was embedded in US by the time we rebelled. Another thing we can blame the Brits for.
Slavery actually exists today in modern societies, it is just that we are in denial. For instance, the UK has Work Fare which is in essence a form of slavery. Prison populations are for profit and are full of contemporary slaves. It was easy for people to justify slavery just as it is now. It is just that you don't come out and call it slavery in the 21st century.
Aren't we, like, all just slaves, maaaaaaan? We're all, like, slaves to the "man", maaaaaan.

In an age of central banking and rampant corruption and inequality, yes we are! Who really wants to work 40 hours a week in an office. It isnt down to choice.

The question was in regards to slavery in the deep south.
Not globally.
All's lost! Everything's going to shit!
Why would you need to look at historical slavery to understand how it was used in the south?
Even if true, that doesn't mean one should have more to say about British, African, or Martian slavery, then about Said topic...slavery in the deep south.
How did southerners justify it?
Did they use socialism to justify it? Atheism? communism? Agnostic? Political? Religion?
And by all means no need to be brief, feel free to elaborate.
Especially anyone on this board who lives in the south.
Teach us.
All's lost! Everything's going to shit!
I wrote a paper on this that never got published but in essence the slave trade continued because it was purely economically driven and had no justification for it on racial grounds.
Capitalism at its best until politics and self serving morality took over.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
We also have allot of Germans, Italians, Jews, Irish but they weren't called British slave owners in the south were they? slave owners were called out by ethnicity?
So Britain alone is responsible for slavery in the south? The banks that financed the south and its cotton trade were owned by The British?
The denial of abolition from 1800s-1860s was because of the British alone?
The use of slavery Biblical passages was the thinking of confederate brits?
The ending of multi racial slave holding-when blacks owned a few slaves was halted, allowing only whites to hold slaves, was British thinking alone?
So southerners couldn't stop British thinking, while the north could?
The bible nor southern morality, nor conservatism, nor capitalism was strong enough to brake Britain ideology?
End game: America never practised slavery, it was those British mofos who ruled the south?

In America an owner could defecate in the mouth of an unruly slave.
Does that sound like something that was economically driven?
In America slaves diet consisted of eatinganimal parts deemed unfit for white consumption, such as the intestines of a pig aka the shit shoot.
Economically driven?
I think it's was Kirkland who was unable to explain that in America the political, the moral christian introduced African Americans into the law books as 3/5 of a human being. The 3/5ths compromise , wow did they have to compromise their values to see my people as a partial human being so they could get equal representation for delegates....and that was economically driven?
More out less rhetorical, nothing to question you for a response, but if need be feel free.
I'm sure your response will be well thought out as opposed to emotionally driven.
