Default How did you see Whitaker/Chavez?

I know this has probably been talked about a lot, but how did you guys see that fight? Personally I was disgusted. I had it 117-111 for Pernell and felt he was robbed. The first half was close but personally I saw Pernell taking the majority of them, but the second half was Pernell's fight. Jabs, ring generalship, defense, quick combos, I think he really outclassed Chavez and was rightfully the first guy (besides IMO Taylor) to beat Chavez.

So what do you guys think? I doubt that anyone here thinks Chavez actually won that fight, but do you think the draw was justified or was it another hometown gift?

I can't quite remember how i scored it but i had it either 3 rounds for Whitaker or 4 rounds total robbery like you said first half was close but 2nd half was mostly dominated by Whitaker i don't know what else to say except Whitaker has 4 losses on his record and atleast 1 of them should of been win for him possibly 2 Whitaker lost few controversial decisions in his time did you ever see Ramirez fight that was even worse than Chavez decision.

I haven't seen that fight yet unfortunately... I know what you mean about his losses though. I'm one of the guys that thinks he should have got the nod against De La Hoya... but then again that fight was MUCH closer than this one, so I wouldn't go as far as saying he was robbed.

I always hate seeing guys get robbed, even if it's someone like John Ruiz.

I remember that fight, I was rooting for Chavez. Even my jaded ass thought that Whitaker was about to give Chavez his first loss. The crowd was so pro Chavez, they would cheer any little thing he did, even after Whitaker was whooping him for most of the round. I remember wondering if there was going to be a rematch, in Whitakers hometown, and how that would turn out.Whitaker was used to getting hosed by then he got robbed in France by Jose Luis Ramirez......

I think Whitaker won that fight, but the ODLH fight was closer however he may have won by a round or two, it wasn't a robbery.

Whitaker put the beat down on Chavez that night.. the crowd knew it, and more importantly Chavez knew it.

Yeah. And I'm glad people still know it. BS decision. I think even most JCC fans wish that decision could have been changed because it really is a bit of a black eye against Chavez. Whitaker was awesome that night but I'm not even sure it is the best match I've seen of his. Shows how good of a fighter he was.

Pete knew what his opponent was going to do before he did.. that’s magical.. only a few select fighters will ever be at that level.

I would say Meldrick Taylor one was imo and i haven't seen it but alot of people think Chavez should of lost 2nd fight with Frankie Randall aswell.

I gave the nod to Pernell by quite a bit. It says alot that a rematch was never made

    whitaker by 3 rounds

This is one of those decisions that it really doesn't matter on paper that he has a L next to his name because he knows, chavez knows, i know, you now, we all know who won that night and i think he is at peace with that.

We were discussing this fight in some other thread a few months ago. If I remember correctly, CutMeMick said that he felt the draw was an understandable decision and that it was a close fight. This really surprised me, since CMM is one of the best posters here, and I usually find myself agreeing completely with what he says.
He's the only person I've ever seen who doesn't think that Whitaker got blatantly robbed. Whitaker took Chavez to school in front of 65,000 of his own fans. I had Chavez winning 3 rounds. The only people in the entire arena who didn't think Whitaker won were the two moronic judges who scored it 115-115.
It's no surprise Chavez never went for a rematch, because he knew he would've been beaten again, and he wouldn't get lucky with a corrupt decision twice in a row.

(By the way, Mick, if my memory is bad and it wasn't you who was the one who didn't think Pernell got robbed.... my fault.)
