Default Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero

Was reading in Sun today that Pete Buckley is finally to retire. His final record 31-249-11. He hasn't won in five years though its worth pointing out he was only ever stopped 10 times.

A legendary journeyman he has saved promoter's asses many times when he steps in at late notice for injured fighters.

He has shared the ring with people like Hamed, Freitas, Rees, Scott Harrison etc..

Have a good retirement mate - you deserve it

    Here's his record

He chose to go the route of quick opponent. He may have been on to something. As you can tell by his record, he never had a hard time landing a fight.

I bet he made some decent money over the years also.

The last few years of Peter isnt what its about Tedious is how I saw it. I remember him starting a good Fighter who at his best was a handfull for anybody, thats a fact. He boxed a few of my lads and you coulnt take the piss. Ive known Peter a long time through the curciut, a great lad. He owes Boxing nothing, Boxing owes Peter good luck for the future thanks for the memories.

Buckley is a guy that many view fondly.

However I'm sorry I've got to nitpick.
Many recall he shared a ring with Hamed, Harrisson, Freitas and Rees.
He didn't fight those fighters without gaining some expierience.
His mentality was not to learn however, it was to make money.

I don't know much about him but I imagine family pressures and needing to have a regular income meant he needed to fight every few weeks in order to provide for his family.

Not everyone can be an contender. He's probably still had a great career really, I mean he'll be able to tell his grandkids he shared the ring with some of Britain's finest fighters of his generation.

True he may have lost them all but at least he was in there. The best most of us will be able to say is that we shook a fighters hand when we went to a boxing match

In your post Bilbo you seem resigned to that fact.

As Buckley was resigned to the fact that he would never become anyone great. He accepted that.
I believe a true fighter would never surrender their ambition.

I realise that to him it's just a living. With that amount of losses it's clear he doesn't really care about fighting all that much

I don't know, maybe he just didn't get the chance.

You obviously know better than me how the system works but I expect that the best he could have realisitically hoped for was modest domestic honours, maybe a British title shot.

Given that that was his limit he probably felt he could make more money fighting regularly for a paycheck rather than fight every 3 or 4 months and have a 30 or 40 fight career.

You're career is just about to take off and you're full of hope and optimism.

Maybe if you lose 3 in a row and realise you'll never be a star but you still love boxing then maybe you'd do the same?

But what am I saying, your Irish all you have to do is turn pro and you'll sell out in Dublin!

I completely understand where you're coming from mate believe me.

I can also identify, who knows I could end up in the same situation soon enough I just feel in the interests of his own health, there are easier ways.

Tell that to the stable of Nobby Nobbs fighters.

PB and others like it are the meat of the fight game and it's very a practical way to be. I'm sure most people enter the game with the idea that they can be world class. Most soon realise they aren't and will never be. You have 2 choices.

Walk away from boxing or resign yourself to the fact that you can make regular money in a sport you love. Think of all the might have been, sky sports is full of them plenty get built up as the next big thing only to be found wanting and most quit. Fighters like PB will probably earn more over their career than those who quit because they'll never be world class.

As I said, I can truely recognise that, but it doesn't take much to be succesful at a domestic level.

Yeah but it's easy for you to say that you live in Ireland

The Irish domestic scene lives off the English.
    Fightrs mingle a lot.
Often it is a win against a British opponent that will move you up the rankings in Ireland.

As for me personally, will I find it easy? No.
I'm either going to America to train or not at all. Domestic level training and competition is not enough.

Without journeymen you wouldn't get "star" fighters.

    Everyone has to learn.

And it doesn't matter how hard you try or how hard you believe YOU WILL achieve something - if you're shit you're shit. And there's fuck all you can do about it.
