Salgado Wins IBF Belt In Close Call Against Mendez

By Alejandro Tostado September 12th, 2011 All Boxing Results

Universidad Autonoma in Guadalajara, Mexico was the site of a thrilling fight last evening that saw Juan Carlos Salgado survive a rocky final round to capture the vacant IBF super feather crown against Argenis Mendez.

Salgado went into the bout having won two straight after losing the WBA super feather title to Takashi Uchiyama in Japan last year but the Mexico City man was expected to have a tough night against New York based Dominican Mendez.

Earlier this year Mendez had won an IBF title eliminator with a sharp performance against a former owner of that title, Cassius Baloyi, in South Africa, and had been victorious in his last six appearances.

Once the bell rang, the fighters got right down to combat with Salgado bringing the pressure but Mendez surprisingly chose to stand and fight rather than to use his advantages of speed and skill and box. More...

Humberto Soto, Marco Antonio Rubio Win Big In Mexico

By Alejandro Tostado September 4th, 2011 All Boxing Results

Two big Mexican names were in action last night south of the border with ex-three weight world champion Humberto Soto and former world middleweight title challenger Marco Antonio Rubio treading the boards on separate fight cards.

Soto, who gave up his WBC lightweight crown in July after four successful title defenses, was operating officially as a light welter for the first time in a scheduled ten round affair with former WBA lightweight strapholder Jose Alfaro at a packed Estadio Centario in Los Mochis, Mexico.

Buoyed by a rabid hometown audience, Soto went right to work, stalking his Nicaraguan rival with an effective jab that kept Alfaro guessing.

Soto's pressure had Alfaro struggling to find his own offense and by the end of the first round, the local icon had shaken the visitor with a bracing straight right, left hook sequence.

Alfaro came out more aggressive in the second but was immediately countered by a four punch combination from Soto that also saw an accidental head clash, leaving both fighters with bad cuts above the right eye. More...

Rungvisai Upsets WBC Super Fly Champ Rojas In Thailand

By Danny Wilson August 20th, 2011 All Boxing Results

Reigning WBC super flyweight champion Tomas Rojas was unseated last night by local man Suriyan Sor Rungvisai at Khunmuangsri Stadium in Muang, Thailand.

Southpaw Rojas used his height advantage in the early rounds, keeping Rungvisai at a distance but the Bangkok based challenger patiently made the most of opportunities as they arose.

Despite giving up five inches in stature to the towering 5'8 tall Rojas, Rungvisai proved quicker as he closed distance behind the jab to launch quick combinations or leaped in with rattling single shots.

Rojas, 31, fought back with a jab of his own and was successful with hooks from both hands but was also getting countered with uppercuts and rights from the 22 year old challenger, who only a year ago had narrowly missed knocking off WBC flyweight king Pongasaklek Wongongkam in this same venue.
