Kid Galahad of Sheffield won the vacant BBBofC British Super Bantamweight Title Saturday night, with a stoppage win over Liverpool’s James ‘Jazza’ Dickens in the tenth round.
A close fought battle which saw fast-fisted Dickens having a decent first half of the contest but Galahad began to pick it up in the latter rounds. The tenth round saw Dickens under pressure. Galahad landed a string of body-shots followed by a left across the face of the Liverpool man who dropped to the canvas. With nose and head bloodied from earlier cuts – Dickens stood for the count but Referee Mark Greene waved it off as Dickens appeared dazed.
Unbeaten Galahad improves to 15 wins (8 by KO), while Dickens’ gets his first loss with 16 wins (5 by KO) 1 loss (1 by KO).
Also on the Hennessy Promotions Bill, Chris Eubank junior of Brighton stopped Bulgarian opponent Alexey ‘the Fish’ Ribchev in the third round of their eight round Super-Middleweight contest.
Eubank, didn’t move when the bell signalled the start of the contest – instead he stood still, in a pose not dissimilar to that which his Father, Chris Eubank Senior, was famous for. Just as Ribchev got close enough, Junior whipped out a jab and fighting commenced (!) At times, he would be a little too risky in his bid to entertain – at one point turning away from the Bulgarian, but there’s no denying he’s flashy. Mid-way through the third, Ribchev was on the canvas and although fighting resumed – he was under pressure and Referee Howard Foster stepped in to stop the fight.
Eubank extends his unbeaten record to 11 wins (6 by KO)
Tyson Fury was ringside to watch Cousin Hughie Fury (albeit not for long!) as he faced Shane McPhilbin of Nottingham in a scheduled eight round Heavyweight contest. McPhilbin retired at the end of the first round citing a shoulder injury.
Hughie Fury improves to 9 wins (6 by KO) while McPhilbin drops to 8 wins (5 by KO) 8 losses (2 by KO) and 1 draw.
Tyson got into the ring with Deontay Wilder of Alabama, USA, at the end of the Show and asked Wilder to fight him after Tyson has fought David Haye in two weeks’ time. Wilder is in the UK sparring with David Haye and it wasn’t long ago (April) that Wilder was calling Fury out himself.
